Living costs

I've never been to the US, but the American guy I work with tells me the cost of living is higher there than here in Dubai. Housing is a fairly major expense, and water and electicity are not cheap, but apart from that I would say it is not expensive at all....

Other accom areas

Price is pretty much right on Jumeira. I live at the Springs as it is affordable. Traffic is not bad at all, especially if you are going towards town in the morning and away in the evening.

I wouldn't imagine you having any problems with living together. I live with male flatmates and no-one has raised an eyebrow.

Where do I find a cleaner?

I live with two lazy guys so I need a cleaner desperately! Any hints on how I go about finding one? I've looked at the ads in the supermarkets, but they are all looking for accommodation included. I really just want someone for a few hours a couple of times a week, at the Springs. Any idea anyone?

I think from now on all the 'old hands' on the forum should just tell anyone that asks that it is impossible to live in sin in Dubai and there are spotters at the airport that are specially trained to shoot suspected unmarried couples on arrival. :D

Definitely depends on the culture as to whether women are held responsible, but I am not even going to start on the assumption that the woman is lower ranking  I notice here that if I get married during my contract I lose my housing allowance. Guess they assume that I would move in with my ...

The female perspective

I am pretty comfortable here, although yeah, you do get the looks - just take it as a compliment and move on and it's survivable. I did make the mistake of being at a bar alone the other night while I was waiting for a friend to show up and that was definitely not my idea of fun. Overall though, yes...

Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy. Not as good as the original tv series, but a bit of a laugh and an easy way to spend an evening without having to think too much.

I am in a different situation - I get a rent allowance and had to find my own accommodation. I believe the accom for you guys is built and is being fitted out now - I know they have ordered all the furniture. Have they said whether or not it will be ready when you get here?

The accom shouldn't be bad - it's new and the furniture sounds nice, so they should deck it out pretty well. I wouldn't worry too much about that. Critical deadline for snow is fast approaching, so we'll see what happens, but the internals are pretty much done - just some of the creative touches in ...

I have an Orion water dispenser. It cost 219 AED, bought from a hypermarket (so a one-off purchase). I buy my water through Oasis for 6AED per container - they are a standard size worldwide I believe. That price includes delivery. There is a deposit of 25AED per container, refundable.

Agree on the fine line that Chocaholic's mentioned...you can't be too laid back or the girl will not be sure that you're even interested - but if you're too eager that's offputting too. I am a personal fan of the thank you text/email the day after your first date - shows you are interested and is al...

It depends on a lot of factors like where you buy it from, but to give you an indication, prices for 6X1.5l bottles from the supermarket start at around the 5AED mark for brands like Alpha and Orion and go up from there...

Sniper's date ideas are good, just maybe a little too full on for a first date. Not sure about the salsa though - you'd really have to make sure she was comfortable with dancing and you were damn good at it or it could be a disaster....

I thought it was interesting too and I'm reading one of his other ones now. They are very John Grisham - ie, page turners, but not necessarily spectacular from a literary point of view.

You need a residence permit to get a license, but apart from that it's easy - costs somewhere around 120Dhs. You don't, however, need a license to go to the holes in the wall which seems to me to be what most people do!
