Watch out for the Jellyfish!!! Feb 25, 2006
Hey All,

It appears to be jellyfish season at the moment, lots of them floating around the beaches particularly in Fujerah. The little round squidgy ones you can see pretty well, but I encountered one I hadn't seen before. It kinda looks like a piece of string with orange bubbles in it, normally a couple of meters long just floating in the water.

Avoid these things! I got stung about 6 times and it leaves really painful bubbled lines where the stingers catch you, feels like your skin is burning, not pleasant at all.

I had some steroid cream and antihistamines, so they did the trick, still hurting quite a bit though.

Try vinegar (which is weak acetic acid)- I have heard that that is good for jellyfish stings.

As are box jellyfish.

Yes EJ, many of them sting, (feels kinda like a bee sting, but many in one spot and you get whelps where the individual stingers have come into contact with the skin) that's how many of them catch prey, their tenticles inject toxins into fish, plankton or whatever else causing paralysis. Most non harmful to humans but pretty painful and doesn't look very nice.

A sting from the Man O War or Box jelly fish is deadly and will kill a human being in a very short space of time - there is no cure, luckily they're only found in certain parts of the world.

Not really Liban, it's just the jelly time of year, you go in the sea, you take your risk and I did and it hurt, no big deal.

Ok stop it now! We were on the other side of the coast and practically everyone got stung. Really no big deal, so chill.

Seriously though-what kind of jellyfish are around here? I've only come across the ones that look like mandarin segments and are harmless. I am actually concerned for my kids.

The ones I saw were the small, round, clear type. But you get the normal bluey or purpley ones too.

I think what stung us was not an entire jelly fish but tentacles that were left over from ones getting caught in fishing nets. The stingers stay active for weeks on their own. They are long, a couple of meters in length and look like a piece of clear string with orange bubbles running through it.

Yes, yes, you know alot about everything... Thats the result of an inflated ego...

The only thing lost on me is how you can live in an Arab and Islamic country and yet be bigoted against us...
