I think they should have taken off with the 2 passangers (they had cleared security) and made anyone else willing to fly and then made anyone who refused to board the plane pay for a new tickets (after all they would have refused to board).

I think terrorist can be fought. Now sputidity is another matter all together... Same with racism...

Although it has to be said that it was pretty silly the way the two guys were dressed in Malaga, considering the temperatures would have been in the mid 30's or so. Things need to calm down a little.

I just saw a guy with a leather jacket at the emirates mall parking lot yesterday afternoon! While some people can walk around in shorts and t-shirts in 8 degree weather (canadians, scandinavians, alaskans, etc.) others may not be used to cooler weather (specially airconditioned airport lounges and airplane cabins).

True, it's always pretty cold on planes anyway. What to do though. The captain of an aircraft has final say over what should be done, and it must be difficult to call it on stuff like this. People quoted in reports on the incident said the atomosphere was really weird. No-one got hysterical, apparently people just calmly got up and left or didn't get on, very strange.

The world is going bananas.

It is sad, disapointing - but not surprising.

Given the flight - Malaga to Manchester, the socio-economic makeup of the passengers would be predominantly British Holiday makers from the lower socio-economic classes (i.e. chavs).

These are the people who make up the majority of the UK population and generally called 'Sun Readers'. The media coverage for these people is sensationalistic and emotional. Logic doesn't really feature much and it's all about the headlines and the photos.

Therefore, for those returning from a holiday, feeling a bit nervous about flying and the restrictions - everyone is hyper-sensitive. Reasoning with people in this state does not help, and I think that the Captain did the right thing for the situation, taking into account commercial considerations. I too agree that the high moral thing to do would be to take off with the 2 asians and leave behind those who objected to them being on board, but it sounds like that would have been a very difficult decision.

Unfortunately its a climate of fear that has been created that leads to illogical fears and aprehension - sure the statistics say that flying is safe, sure these guys went through security and logic says they would have been scrutinised more than a Brit holiday maker in shorts and flip-flops.

Incidentally, my fellow countrymen when on holiday do tend to wear less than an average Asian brought up in the East would consider wearing in public. We had guests from Africa once during a heatwave in the UK, but they found the temperature cold for them and went round in jackets and jumpers - it's what you're used to.

(Incicentally, in the UK our heating never went above 20C - 22C in a car would be like a sauna - here we cool the temperature to 25C and that feels cool - 21 to 23 is decidely chilly. A neighbour recently came back from Germany and suffered terribly in the un-airconditioned houses there during the heatwave when temperatures were in the mid 30s!)

Cheers,
Shafique

(Yes, I admit, I'm a bit of a snob - chavs just rub me up the wrong way and yobbish behaviour gives me the creeps.)

Trouble is, how do you reinstate trust in people? It's very difficult when there have been several incidents one after the other.

Also 'clearing security' doesn't necessarily mean someone hasn't still managed to get something on board. Look at the woman who went nuts recently, and they had to divert the plane and take her off, she managed to get on with hand creams and all manner of other things.

Knowing people that work for airlines, I can tell you there are daily communications between carriers describing the different ways people evaded security checks and got things on board, if someone is determined enough, where there's a will, there's definately a way.

A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Malaga said: "These men had aroused suspicion because of their appearance and the fact that they were speaking in a foreign language thought to be an Arabic language, and “the pilot was refusing to take off” until they were escorted off the plane."

Yes that's in today's reports dear, clearly you didn't read the link which shows the full report from yesterday with the full details. The pilot refused to take off due to protests from passengers who walked off the plane and others who refused to board.

A good write up of the incident on the BBC web site, including quotes from experts echoing my thoughts on the events and also includes comments from readers at the end (which I found interesting too) :

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/5270500.stm

Some quotes for the lazy:

A passenger on the flight, Heath Schofield, explained the suspicions. "It was a return holiday flight, full of people in flip-flops and shorts. There were just two people in the whole crowd who looked like they didn't belong there."

Were these legitimate fears or is this group hysteria? How did not wearing flip-flops become a danger sign?

"What's happening informally is that people are applying their own version of terrorist profiling," says psychologist Gary Fitzgibbon.

"It's filtered down to the public that anyone who looks like a Muslim is potentially a terrorist. And what happens in groups is that you get people saying that somebody fits the profile."

...

Once the group has identified somebody as behaving strangely, this can then become self-fulfilling, says Dr Fitzgibbon.

"There's the 'audience effect', which means that if people are aware that they're being looked at, their behaviour can become awkward and self-conscious."

...
Some comments:

Fred: presumably these two gentlemen dressed in warm clothing were the only ones on the flight intelligent enough to check the weather forecast for Manchester before they boarded the plane.
Lyndon Rosser, Cardiff

All passengers have to go through really rigorous checks before boarding. To summarily decide that these checks are somehow invalid is to introduce an anarchy based on prejudice. The logical conclusion is to do away with all official boarding checks and let passengers check each other. Now that would make air travel interesting...

Nice attempt Serpent - good to see that you've mastered the internet and the keyboard, but perhaps you can ask your mom (or some other adult) to explain to you punctuation - the use of capitals at the start of sentences and full stops at the end of sentences.

Or perhaps it is because you are typing with the left hand only?

Oh, and don't let the facts of the reports and interviews given by the boys influence your views will you! :)

It's so crazy. I'm sure if a Muslim Extremist wants to detonate a bomb on a 737 from Malaga to Manchester, they would wear flip flops and be swigging beer to make themselves a little inconspicuous. After all the speculation and unjustified removal of Muslims from flights, I think these guys are a step ahead and bright enough to get around the system!

Maybe they'll get to the point where they'll escort British tourists with brown hair, brown eyes and a tan after being sat on a beach on the Costa Del Sol for 2 weeks because they have an 'Arab like complexion'. As George Galloway would say 'This is absolutely proposterous!'

Chocs - the news is a bit dated. The 12 were questioned and released with no charge and were let to travel onwards. Their crime apparently amounted to them taking out mobile phones.

I think there have been at least 2 more incidents of planes being diverted etc - one Irish plane from the US where a person with an Irish accent, but claiming to be Al Qaeda, phoned and said there was a bomb on the plane. The plane landed in Shannon airport, everyone questioned and the luggage checked.. but nothing.

I saw a bit on the news where a plane to the US was diverted - but didn't pay attention - just remember that it was diverted to another US airport from the destination and everyone was being questioned. It was a United Airlines plane if I recall correctly.

Separately there was a report of a flight from South American to the US where a passenger had dynamite on their checked in luggage!

Crazee times.

Cheers,
Shafique

Apparently there were other Muslim-looking tourists that were on the flight, but they weren't kicked off. So you can't say it is completely down to a fear of Asians and Arabs.

Well, yes I can say it is down to the misconception of Arabs, otherwise why were these two lads questioned in the first place? I'm sure there were other Muslim Arabs on the plane but those other Muslim Arabs were probably like me... Half British, Half Arabic, technically Muslim but doesn't comply to the rules ie wears Western clothes, doesn't pray, eats pork... You wouldn't know I was Arabic or Muslim by looking at me. The media let you believe what they want you to.
