Travel "Essentials" Feb 27, 2008
I was wondering what people consider travel "essentials" these days.

It used to be that one need to bring a toothbrush everywhere but nowadays most hotels can provide you with one, etc.

I was booked at a hotel in Georgia (the country) and they had a 5ml package of shampoo (head and shoulders!). So I thought that perhaps shampoo would be essential for traveling to Georgia. Anuway, got the hell out of that hotel and the new one has shampoo (I think but I am not due for a shower for another few days...)

Here are a few things I do bring no matter where I go

1. Flashlight (torch) small maglite type.
2. Small pocket knife (swiss army type).
3. Deodorant
4. One pair of underwear and socks per day

How about you?

Are you Asian? No offence, but it sounds like the kind of stuff an Asian would pack.

1. cash
2. mobile phone
3. passport or IDs
4. toothbrush with toothpaste
5. deodorant
6. undies and liners
7. swiss knife (this one can't be part of the handcarry), so I don't bring anymore.
8. Vicks vaporub and other ointments
9. Lipbalm

It is advisable to bring first aid kit while on travel, but I often forget it.

# 8 is interesting.
# 7 I have on my carry on luggage. However on a recent trip I got to the airport after they had closed the ticket counter (not emirates) but I convinced them to let me on board but it meant I had to carry my bad thru the airport (a bag with my suits, etc. which I always check in). I cleared security with the bag and it went thru with the pocket knife (small but...)

1. Obviously passport, cash (multi-currencies), credit cards, e-tickets.
2. Map & 2 sheets of paper contain summary of travel itineraries & places (when I had time to browse internet & summarize), else pocket guide (DK Eyewitness series).
3. Gillette Mach3 in travel case; toothbrush+toothpaste+small tube of liquid soap+small towel (if staying in budget hotels).
4. Mobile phone & charger (this one often left out).
5. Digital camera with extra batteries & charger + portable lightweight tripod.
6. Portable media player with 120GB harddisk loaded with movies & MP3 (+charger).
7. Aspirin (you'll never know when headache strikes, especially in cold weather).
8. Lastly, clothing depends on weather and number of days.

Others, I can buy from streets & supermarkets.

Talk about stereotyping. I'm an asian but I dont bring any of the items on his list. In fact, I bring the same items on your list- except for the hair wax.
