Nasa discovers new life on Earth Dec 03, 2010
Amazing find:

NASA has discovered a new life form, a bacteria called GFAJ-1 that is unlike anything currently living in planet Earth. It's capable of using arsenic to build its DNA, RNA, proteins, and cell membranes. This changes everything. Updated.

NASA is saying that this is "life as we do not know it". The reason is that all life on Earth is made of six components: Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur. Every being, from the smallest amoeba to the largest whale, share the same life stream. Our DNA blocks are all the same.

That was true until today. In a surprising revelation, NASA scientist Felisa Wolfe Simon and her team have found a bacteria whose DNA is completely alien to what we know today, working differently than the rest of the organisms in the planet. Instead of using phosphorus, the newly discovered microorganism-called GFAJ-1 and found in Mono Lake, California-uses the poisonous arsenic for its building blocks. Arsenic is an element poisonous to every other living creature in the planet except for a few specialized microscopic creatures.

haha , Now who would imagine , NASA with their billions in dollar of funding , a large of chunk of it going to the SETI program would come with a news stating they found new life on earth ? , When i first read the title I automatically imagine it was a unicellular organism in maybe earth's moon or something.. but alas , on good ol earth.

That bacterium will likely be the only thing left when everything else gets wiped out. Earth starting anew with a new biological basis. Pretty cool! That would make a great basis for a sci-fi story...

Very interesting piece of news - thanks for starting the thread eh.

Coincidentally I was watching an excellent documentary by David Attenborough this week about the origins of life - there's a small bit about extremophile bacteria.

It just goes to show, what we think we know about the universe changes over time. It does show another 'branch in the tree of life' and the scientists are excited about the possibility of a different 'tree'. This newly discovered bacterium is only slightly (but still, significantly) different from other life forms - substitiuting arsenic for phosphorus in some macro-molecules.

That's a beauty of science, the more we look and explore the more we learn:
Then look again and yet again, thy sight will return unto thee weakened and made dim.

Cheers,
Shafique

It would be more interesting if NASA do what they are PAID TO DO , which is finding that 3 headed creature on mars , that excretes gold , and soon !

It also looks like some top scientists believe life exists on Titan.

That's actually what most people speculated what Nasa's announcement was going to be about - that they had strong evidence for life on Titan.

Hey eventhorizon , not that I want to belittle your post ,Just its odd NASA with their exobiologists each one with half a dozen phd's , dont have nothing to show in terms of finding any concrete evidence , sure the large funding they get from the govt is mostly to enhance propulsion technology , the story of titan has been theorized from a very long time.

And its the lack of funding due to the economic meltdown that has caused them to cut power in all their obersvatories, this arsenic microbe find should have been done by another govt arm the EPA.
