Staying in a Hotel room and Privacy issues Apr 03, 2006
As technology is becoming cheaper and devices are getting smaller in size espacially wireless cameras... the risk on someone's privacy is increasing.. There are hidden cameras fixed in hotel rooms, washrooms, or may be fitting room in the clothes shop.. As long as there is about half an inch of space inside the smoke detector, it can be rigged with a hidden camera. These products are especially dangerous for people moving into a hotel room or apartment because criminals had plenty of time to do a good job in rigging it. and then they can sell this video of your private time,, to all over the world by internet.. many hotels are caught worlwide commiting this crime..

MY question here is.. Whats the situation of security and privacy in hotels of dubai.. have you heard about any case like this.. ???

What you got to worry about????

in hotels there are 100s of rooms and 100s of people to watch, what is so interesting about your life that they would like to watch you instea of all other people.

I wouldn't like anyone to watch me even if i'm just sitting there doing nothing, but....... if what you are saying is a fact then... you got nothing to do but being watched..

Anyway, if you got something to worry about, just get yourself a flat.

hope you are not planning something bad..

or ..... well.... the other thing ;) but i think 80 % of the single men rooms would be doing the same .. heehhehe except if you got Miss World with you, they will not be watching you.

cheers

hmmm.. this issue really scares me. Modern technology makes you feel you're never alone. you never know who's recording your voice.. filming you or tracking you without feeling a thing. oh well, what to do about this? I am not really sure people would be checking for hidden cameras or any recording devices everyday! you know experts can sometimes place these things in minutes if not seconds.
but a very interesting topic i may say.

I'm not saying that I'm scared just about myself.. Its a global issue my dear.. Imagine if you went to visit a far place or other country and you have to stay in the hotel... somebody recorded your video of your private time.. and then sold it on eBay.com as a p<3n video... and never forget the p2p sharing... don't mind but would you bear it ?

The hidden cam private videos gets more money than those professional ones..!

I second Jupiter!
And this should not be seen as paranoia (even though with some people it's almost paranoia  ).. but it is a matter worth thinking about.

a) That kind of surveillance technology is expensive and if every room was equipped with those tiny cameras, the infrastructure for that would be extremely expensive and would need personnel to look after it.

b) There are a large number of hotels in Dubai because this is a major business and tourism hub. I highly doubt that you need to worry about many hotels having secret surveillance.

c) Are you worried about secret surveillance in hotels all over the world, or is there some reason you think Dubai is more likely to have it?

it's not only about secret surveillance in hotel rooms (all over the world) but also in offices, seminar classes, conference rooms, .. you know.. where it is not merely about filming you having s.e.x. !

For example at work, you have to watch what you're saying. Walls have 'literally' ears (and eyes)!

It is true that such surveillance equipment is costly, and it is not likely to be EVERYWHERE, but who knows how bad one's luck can be??

and that cost is much less than the income they will be earning

yea.. the threat increases in less controlled areas/cities.. dubai is lil secure place.

Its a common problem for everybody in the world and everyone should think about it.. and My point to start this topic is to get views of others sharing the info as there are members from different countries on this forum!

So the point of your post is to scare everyone into thinking that hotel rooms here and perhaps all over the world are under surveillance.

The moral of the story is - stay at home.

How did I do?

To discuss cameras in hotel rooms is most ridiculous , do you really believe they put camera in every or any hotel rooms in dubai or anywhere else?

Its utter nonsense.

Carry on watching James Bond films

Oh come on!!! you wanna tell me this never happens??? i doubt it though that this could be a problem at hotels in Dubai.. or in countries with a high security system. But still, the 'CHANCE' is there!

Surveillance could even (mostly) be done by people who know you and wanna know more about u. So you could be personally targeted!! (ok i guess i'm starting to sound like James Bond! hmm.. Anybody here saw the movie 'Inside Man' - Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster- Clive Owen?)

Who says I'm paranoid ---- and why do they want to know? :)

I feel sorry for anyone who has to watch the video feed from our hotel/appartment for the past month - watching the kids play all night, sleep til late and us coming in and crashing after a hard days sight-seeing/shopping/working!! :)

99.9% of the goings on in hotels are going to mudane - so why bother?

"Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't watching!"

Life is too short to worry about this, I think.

Shafique

Well there can be several adaptations to this thing of being spied on. For example, there was a high profile case of a prestigious parlour in Dubai videoing all their clients while getting treatments. I am told that tapes of these sold for very high prices and one high profile guy who bought this ended up seeing his own sister in it...and reported it. Several people were arrested.

I don't know how true the bit about the story about who and how it got reported...but the rest is true as it was in the newspapers.

Also stories about cameras in changing rooms that someone may have put in just for a perv are common in the west I am told and I know of one case in Dubai.

Then there are peep holes that staff may create in trial rooms...I have seen some Bur Dubai tailor shops have them...although I didn't catch anybody red handed peeping in!

Not like its on my mind all the time, but its true that I very rarely try on clothes in store when I buy/tailor....so you'll recognise me at the next DF meet as the girl with ill-fitting clothes

actually what they are saying is right....lots of such cases are happening these days...i once got an MMS of lady changing clothes in changing room. it's not as if i regreted watching it but still its really bad to do such thing....and believe me it happens alot nowdays....but that does'nt mean there will be cameras in all hotel rooms and change rooms...so no need to worry about that...

So, primarily we are talking about men who want to see women naked.

Why are there so few cases of women secretly videotaping men in the changeroom?

This is all starting to remind me of the letters to the editor in 7 Days about the labourers on the beach who blatantly harrass and try to molest women and girls. "Poor men, they build this city and you are so disrespectful to them." "They are living away from their wives." "Women should cover-up on the beach." GIVE ME A BREAK. It isn't up to women to avoid changeroom, bathroom, spas, beaches etc. in order to avoid lecherous men. Some men need to have better manners and give more respect. Would you want someone to videotape, leer, or molest your sister or your mother? Thinking of that alone should help men dictate their own conduct.

Kanelli you are taking it in the wrong way...it's not about men or women. it's about what is happening...it could happen with neone irrespective of gender...i was only trying to say that its better to be safe for everyone....there are people doing such stuff....and they just circulate it all over the web...and i told an incidence where someone sent it to me....and i strictly belive that its a really bad thing to do....you cant stop the people who are doing it...so it's better to be safe from your side...

How can a person be safe? Don't leave their home and check that a camera isn't installed in their own bathroom or bedroom?

Because we are ugly and women often don't know how to use the camcorder?

Have you seen my Mother? See her in the changing room and that would put any man off being a leering, peeping tom!

CUTTING OFF HIDDEN CAMERAS
by Candice DeLong
A former FBI agent, Candice DeLong is the crime expert on Lifetime's What Should You Do? The show airs Saturdays at 11 p.m. ET

# Be aware that portable cameras can be used in crowds, like malls, beaches, parks or gyms. They are often hidden in duffel or gym bags.

# Spy stores sell special portable cameras with tiny lenses hidden in hats, eyeglass frames, shirt buttons and pens.

# Cell phones equipped with cameras are being used to secretly take pictures of women undressing. A common target is the gym, beaches, etc.

# Fixed cameras are more elaborate and invasive. Voyeurs pick a location, hide the camera, and wait for you to come to them.
Hotels, locker rooms, dressing rooms and bathrooms are common hiding places for fixed cameras.

# Other common locations for fixed cameras are above toilets and beds. In some cases, landlords have planted cameras and put the footage on pornographic websites.

# Fixed cameras can also be disguised as common household items: inside clock radios, smoke detectors, picture frames, lamps, tissue boxes and even stuffed animals.

# If you're concerned about privacy in a bedroom or bathroom, examine all items and search for any small holes or openings. If you see glass, it could be a lens.

# The best test is to make sure the product does what it should. For instance, cameras disguised as clock radios won't play music.

# keep a personal spy camera detector device if you are moving to such a suspicious place if you can afford that (price starts from $75-500).

# If you become suspicious that someone is recording you with a hidden camera, report it to the police.
