MEP Engineer - Should I enlist an agency or apply direct? Jul 10, 2008
Hi everyone,

I am living in Ireland and looking for work in Dubai, or the Gulf region. I have seen some jobs advertised on company websites, but I was wondering, should I enlist the services of an employement agency to represent me, or am I better applying direct? I am already registered with an Irish agency (Brunel) that recruits for the Gulf region.

I am a building services / MEP engineer. Degree qualified in mechanical engineering (equivalent to UK M.Eng) and I have been working in the industry (in Ireland) for approx. 4yrs in Ireland. I hold memberships with professional organisations and I am 30yrs old. My skill sets would probably best suit a design or coordiantion type role, or junior management.

I know how to best represent myself in the Irish marketplace, however I am not so certain about things in the Gulf. My fear is that by pointing out possible roles to an agency, they are going to send in CV's not just for me, but for anyone else on their books that may suit. Thoughts / input on my dilemna would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

The easiest thing would be to register with an agency that specializes with Gulf construction industry placements. There are a number of these around…

Bear in mind that if the agency asks you for a processing fee or “finders fee” they are not acting legally under the UAE Labour laws – this is normally a warning sign.

Another tips is to check the current vacancies on the sites you register with on a daily basis, this will give you a good idea as to how many positions they turn over a week/ month and whether it is worth continuing with them. Most sites require that you are proactive in the process after registration, that is to say once you have submitted your basic info to the agent that you then search through their database and make active applications rather than waiting for them to point out possible positions.

Try the following:

http://www.damacholding.com/careers/cur ... ?DeptID=45
http://www.hillintl.com/
http://www.hillmcglynn.com/
http://www.recruitgulf.com/member.asp?MID=38
http://www.daultonpersonnel.co.uk/index.htm
http://www.charterhouseme.ae
http://adr-recruitment.com/jobs/
http://www.halcrow.com/html/careers/apply_search.htm

These are not all “construction industry” sites per se, but a number are, or have a good amount of construction industry jobs.

Applying direct works best if you are already “in town” or have a friend who has recommended you for a position or given you a personal contact to follow up with.
