I wonder if Etisalat/du provides air card (PCMCIA card with GSM/CDMA card, some also comes as external USB device). It's convenient carrying small laptop and online anytime.

- Visit Madinat Jumeirah
- Options: rent a quadbike at the big dunes on the way to Hatta, or do desert safari, or do skiing

High speed & unlimited, you'll get one with relatively cheap fee (from 149 to 349 AED, from 256Kbps to 2Mbps). If you don't access adult-related, VoIP-related, some file sharing, and some social networking websites, then you'll be fine. If you are techie and know "the workaround" then ...

I don't know in Dubai but my wife had her teeth scaling and braces adjustment in Bahrain for 50 BHD per visit. If that's the standard of Middle East, so expect at least 500 AED. Just a figure.

Re: Financing a 4x4 purchase in Dubai

Do they just want to see a regular pattern in my account or do they need to be satisfied that I can afford it? I get a AED2000 car allowance per month and I am transferring a decent chunk of my salary from the UK to Dubai every month for cost of living etc... I see that your salary is transferred t...

How much AED you would earn? Family/kids (school)? Preference? Lifestyle?

Never lived in HK, but visited once. Foods, clothings, and transportation (taxi) are more or less the same. Hotel is a lot more expensive in HK (about 1.5x for the same class), so I assume the apartment too.

I shipped 12 medium-size boxes of stuffs by DHL when moving from Bangkok to Dubai for about 7000 AED. I'd suggest you leave big stuffs in UK, just bring couple of big luggages (that fit on the flight) including important stuffs. The rest, you could buy in Dubai. 25000 AED is too much to furnish 1BR,...

If you can find all those items for 10000dhs Id hire you tomorrow!!!... However must be of a quality that is suitable for living for 5years plus not the usual 6months. First, OP didn't say 3 BR and you mentioned 1BR, so I assume it's for 1BR. My experience to furnish 1BR for my family (2 adults, 1 ...

Re: Furniture

There is surviving and there is living!! So far, I'm lucky that I'm not surviving, I enjoy living in Dubai. Dine outside couple of times a week. Go out of town once a week. Go holiday abroad twice a year. I could have afford more, but why spend more. But hey, that's me. You forgot to mention curtai...

Depends on your work contract. Some don't allow you to join competitor. Some don't allow you to resign in the first year. Some employ a penalty (e.g. 3 times monthly salary). etc

This is a real gray area. If you're transferring within the same Free Zone, this should be acceptable. If you're transferring outside or to another Free Zone, I believe you will run into problems. In fact, I thought it's the other way around. If we have work contract saying that we can't join compe...

But it seems to me that there are a lot of other costs associated with moving into a new place. That's true. Have you been hammered? Hammered = fake torrent trackers/servers (e.g. RIAA, anti p2p, recording studios, security companies, etc) will keep bombing you once they detect that you're downloading pirated files (which 99.99% are). Try to put the water (or boiled water) into a white bowl (for better sight), let it for few hours, sometimes you'll find sands, or worst the water is yellowish. At least in my apartment.

You can get immediate credit card at time of opening at the bank where the company has cooperation with. Else, open a salary account (I got mine from NBD) with a company letter saying that your salary will be transferred to that account.
