Re: Cost Of Iraqi And Afghanistan Wars For Israel To USA

Ok - it just was a funny typo.. well I thought so. :) Back to the subject - has anyone counted how much control over Iraq's oil reserves will yield? I know Halliburton is sitting pretty right now, but I read that Chinese companies were also getting contracts. Now that the deed is done, you'd have ho...

Re: SPECIAL AMERICAN FREE PRESS ON THE SARAH PALIN PHENOMENO

MCL - I have to be honest, I didn't read the text of the article posted (and deleted by the mod, leaving just the link - good job there). I may do now that there's just a link and your comments above. What you say is echoed by Noam Chomsky who argues that there isn't really a true democracy in the U...

Re: Islam and the invention of the University

Oh, and I forgot to say. Why do you think a blogger and you are more credible than the Guinness Book of World records? I'm sure they don't just rely on blogs or Google searches. I know that Historians George Makdisi, William Dalrymple, Diarmaid MacCulloch (all published bona-fide historians) are cre...

Re: A Review Of Huff's Book, 'The Rise Of Early Modern Scien

Well, this is certainly an interesting view point. On the historical aspects - I can't disagree with Huff. Indeed, the reviewer points to clear historical facts that we are all aware of: Huff doesn't deny that Muslim science was, for centuries, more advanced than European science. Indeed, there was ...

Re: Islam And The Invention Of The University

Still in denial. The whole big thing point is that your blogger's initial premise has been debunked by the same book he took his one quote from (Makdisi's book). I concede that I only quoted Huff citing what Makdisi wrote about European universities copied from Islamic ones - but your blogger only ...

Re: A Review Of Huff's Book, 'The Rise Of Early Modern Scien

Sigh. From your review: Huff doesn't deny that Muslim science was, for centuries, more advanced than European science. Indeed, there was virtually no science at all in the Latin West during the Early Middle Ages. Huff also points out that Muslim science was innovative, the most dramatic example bein...

Re: A Review Of Huff's Book, 'The Rise Of Early Modern Scien

Oh, and given a university is an institution that gives out degrees, this titbit from the review is interesting: Essentially, the student got his degree if and when his personal teacher felt he was ready for it. With the exception of medical science under some rulers, there were no attempts to stand...

Re: Islam And The Invention Of The University

So now you are dismissing Makdisi even though he was the only reference quoted by your blogger in the OP. Interesting. As I said: Your blogger perhaps should have quoted Huff and not Makdisi. But that's not my problem, is it? So, loon quotes blogger who cites a historian Makdisi - a cursory search u...

Re: We Need An Alternative To The Democrats And GOP

gadfly - this post was interesting. Thanks.

Are you American?

I'm not - and therefore I'm just a curious bystander/observer. However, I can't see how the system can be broken and an independent (or third party) can make a breakthrough. Any ideas/thoughts?

Re: A Review Of Huff's Book, 'The Rise Of Early Modern Scien

Re: A Review Of Huff's Book, 'The Rise Of Early Modern Scien

Re: PA Approves Textbook Banned In Israel

Well, on this one I agree with loon blogger Elder of Zyon: PA throws away huge PR victory . Because they hate Israel that much. Ha'aretz had an exclusive story today that looked very embarrassing to Israel: Israel bans a textbook, Haaretz reports that the Palestinians are more open than the Israelis...

Re: A Review Of Huff's Book, 'The Rise Of Early Modern Scien

The Fourth Crusade was at the beginning of the 13th century (1202 to 1204). European universities had been set up by then and there was already contact with the Islamic empire. Islamic education had been already well established and the likes of Avicenna and Averroes had come and gone already. Howev...

Demise of the Dollar

Tom Jones' thread on Fisk's recent interview led me to this article from last week by the man himself. Re: A review of Huff's book, 'The Rise of Early Modern Scien

I'm not really interested in comparing Greek philosophers, to be honest. I was just challenging you on your statement about Greek classics only being studied in the West after the 4th Crusade from Eastern Roman documents. I mean, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II under whose reign the fifth and si...

Fortune Telling?

I saw that a 'famous astrologer' is visiting the UAE soon - and it led me to think of a query I've had about fortune tellers in general. Surely if astrology, tarot cards, tea leaves, chicken bones etc etc worked, we'd be able to find some examples of headlines such as 'Psychic wins lottery' or 'Plan...

Re: A Review Of Huff's Book, 'The Rise Of Early Modern Scien

RC - you know more on the subject matter of the Greek philosophers than I do. I can't comment on Ibn Rushd's works (or Plato, Aristotle or even Socrates and Pythagoras for that matter). I'm happy to lump these into things I don't yet understand - along with fluid dynamics, string theory and female l...

Serbia a few days ago: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11507253 The loon silence is deafening. Re: Fortune Telling?

Don't know Sage.

Superstition is rife amongst some sections of society - and even though Islam forbids fortune telling (forbidden in the Quran), I'm not sure if there is a loop hole in the UAE law for astrology (I mean, the papers all carry Horoscopes, for example).

Re: Gay-bashers Thrive In Modern-day Netherlands

FD - if there is an issue with the Dutch Morrocan kids (and there does seem to be an issue with education, unemployment and general criminality) then it is indeed valid to look into what the causes are.
