Minimum Speed Limit

Minimum Speed Limit May 18, 2007
It was months that I was thinking to this important issue that why we can not see any minimum speed limit in UAE highways. Reaching with 120KM speed to cars driving 50KM in the last lane of Sheykh Zayed road and have to suddenly push the brakes was a regular event and I am sure it has been source of fo many accidents.

By the way, it seems UAE pilice has decided to apply new rules for minimum speed limit.

However, based on covered signs here and there, I am still worry to see
that the speed limit is not going to be applied to specific lanes and seems that minimum limit is going to be applied for all lanes!

This method is absolutely wrong and I am sure this rule should be changed very soon after some months.

Why? because minimum speed limit should be applied on two or three last lanes in a highway and not all lanes. Cars with lower speeds could use first lanes and drive safely.

So, minimum speed limit should be sensitive to lanes in a highway and should not be applied on all lanes.

This is regular in other countries and when you drive in highways in other countries that mostly follow american driving systems, you can see minimum speed limit signs over last two or three lanes in highways.

By the way, this new signs would be uncovered in a couple of days and we will see that will help reducing accidents but, would be changed, based on my predictions!

Even the slowest cars do not drive at 60 kph on highways. As for cameras to catch slower-than-60 cars, I don't think the technology is even there. What happens when a guy is going 50 kph, making 10 other cars behind him go at 50 kph too? Or everyone is in a traffic jam?Everyone will get the ticket, because the cops can't be bothered to sort thru all the photos. I already know first-hand how they handle speed-camera photos currently.

Hey this issue came up last month i think ... i read it on 7 days .... that talks and arrangements are already being prepared for the new minimum speed limit law

as to what i recall the details are like this ....

Min speed : 60Kph

Radar will be set to catch slow drivers on only from the Fast mid to the left most lane so from slow Mid to the right most lane are safe from it ... and they are still talking to specialist on which how to set the radar not to flash on plates on heavy trafic

but the way i look at this is they might use video cameras instead of the typical flasing photo cameras ...... cause they already installed alot of video cameras across the country to monitor accidents .... specially on places with high fatality rates ...

they ca use these types of carema that reads and mark out a car that goes below 60kph .... since its video the cops can see who is the cause and would only zoom in into the first cars plate not on the ones behind him ..... and they will also know if its on heavy trafic or not ....

with todays technology .... its totally possible

And that is where the problem arises, my fine-feathered friend  . You only have to go backstage at Deira Muroor to see how they handle speed-camera photos right now to figure out how they'd handle any future video system. Way too much work for the man.

We have noticed a new kind of speed camera set-up on Dubai x Al Ain rd. using 2 cameras, we presume this may be an additional camera for the minimum speed.
