Food Thread May 23, 2011
I love cooking and experimenting with food/seasoning.

At Lulu's in Al Barsha I found:

Cranberry vinegar. I'm hooked on it!! Makes a wonderful salad dressing. I went back to stock up and they were all out. :( I will keep checking back at Lulu's because it is amazing.

If anyone likes cooking Mexican/Spanish food Lulu's has some great Mexican seasoning. They come in small tins and there are about 7 different kinds. I tried two of them:
The oregano has this bit of a bite to it and is stronger depth of flavor than the usual. It is stocked where you can find the Tacos and salsa products.
The Smokey Paparika is amazing, especially for chilli.

I love "Trees Can Dance" hot sauces. Great selection. I put it on roasted chicken or dip the chicken in it.

Anyone else come across some interesting food finds??

Oh that all sounds amazing, but I can feel my acid reflux going nuts at the mention of anything spicy

Here's one for the pork lovers. Found in Spinneys, sausages stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon - simply wonderful on the BBQ.

Hey BB, I keep forgetting to ask you, any recommendations on things to do with sweet potatoes? I love them but am running out of ideas.

Encona West Indian Sauce and Hot Pepper Sauce

Great with anything but not for the faint hearted

Mexican - Salsa with habenero really spices up the chilli

I love sweet potatoes!!! Oven baked sweet potato fries Chocs. Here's a website with recipes.

http://allrecipes.com/Recipes/fruits-an ... ewAll.aspx

There are some recipes that are pretty much the same but with different ingredients used. There is a tab for "recipes" and a tab for "top 20". Check it out and let me know if you use any of them. I think I'll be making some sweets in the next day or two using one of the recipes.

Thanks Keith. Give Trees Can Dance a try if you like hot pepper sauce. I've seen fresh habeneros in Spinney's and I think Lulu's as well!!!! Supposed to be the hottest pepper.

talking about food reminding me of two colleagues today at work, they were talking about a duck recipe, and we smoked about 2 cigarettes before they finished, cooking is like chemistry i guess, wrong quantity in any of ingredients and it can mess the whole thing...

miss nice food so much tbh....

Two more goodies that I found.

In Spinneys frozen cabinet. In a plain brown box, 2 to a box, roasted vegetables with goat cheese in a dough pocket (wellington) that you pop in the oven and bake till done. That and a salad makes a meal.

In Geant in the frozen cabinet section near the ice cream and bagels. Made by Casino, chocolate crossiants (6 to a bag) and plain crossiants (8 to a bag) that you pop in the oven and bake until done. Delish and wonderful in the morning!!!!

I've got a friend who makes sweet potato casserole and she puts marshmallows on top. The marshmallows are melted and golden and the casserole tastes amazing!

allrecipes.com is one of my favourite cooking websites :D

do they stock any non-stale taco shells...I gave up after the second try (forget where)....Hard shells were stale/rancid!

I eat nothing that has been frozen...nothing processed and nothing in a can except black beans (and once in a blue moon tuna fish from a can).

For a whole range of weird and wonderful ingredients, try Safestway on the Sheikh Zayed Road. They stock all sorts of products and brands from the US, Canada, Australia and South Africa that you cannot find anywhere else.

Its the only place I have found coarse ground cornmeal, an essential ingredient in a American recipe I inherited for a sort of flat treacle tart that is completely moorish called 'Chess Pie'.

I love Safestway!!! Much more expensive than any of the other markets but worth it when you want the real deal from home. I am always onthe hunt for Hellman's Mayonnaise made in the US or the UK. That tasteless white (except the the oil in it!!!) wallpaper glue out of Saudi Arabia is horrible.

I don't think he means the thick, black teacle - I only ever use that stuff for the Christmas cake! I miss baking, used to love making rock cakes, cherry and fruit cakes. Scones.

Oh if anyone finds Clotted cream please let me know, I've never ever been able to find it! And no thick whipping cream just will not do.

Saw the clotted cream in - I believe - Geant. Will check next time I go there.

Some people trawl the malls, I trawl supermarket aisles. :( I can spend a good 2 hours going up and down and checking out the stock, reading labels. Oh, lord, I need to find another hobby!!!!

Plenty of taco shells. I read the produced date as well as the expiration date.

With the frozen foods I read the labels. I only buy frozen that has no preservatives. No processed food in this house!!!

Having just bbq'd for the first time in a year..it was "ok". I actually made carmelized onions for the steak, and they rocked! I used that allrecipes.com site as well. I bit of red wine and a sprinkle of cane sugar made the dish.

I am really loving eating good, fresh food here in Aus. Sadly, lots of produce was wiped out in the floods, so it is on par with DXB prices, but much more fresh and tasty. I am on the BQ 4-5 times a week here. The other night I did corn-on-the-cob, steak, sausages, chicken, as well as pineapple and leg ham.

Funny that Chocs mentioned clotted cream....we got 6 tubs of it in a food hamper today. Never heard of it. What the heck do we do with it?
