OT: Free/affordable graduate school? Nov 15, 2009
I'm thinking to go back to school for masters degree while waiting this crisis away and I could get a proper job again. I reckon some countries in EU offer free/affordable undergraduate schools (bachelor's degree), despite very high taxes. I wonder if there are such countries offering free/affordable graduate school (in business/management/IT) and as well able to work (as student or part time) during spare time to support living cost. In long term, I'd like to immigrate to Canada (Vancouver), I'm not sure they offer such. Otherwise it would be perfect.

xty in Iran education is free ( of course if you are interested in coming to Iran!!;) ) for locals we have to take a tight exam, but I think it might be easier for foreigners. If you were interested I can check it.

I'm in my 30s. I would say "perseverance" is more suitable for me. I'm a person who always committed/trying to find solutions or other ways if one fails. I hate to sit down and doing nothing. That's why these last few months without job has been killing me. Not that I'm not capable but just that sometimes it's difficult to express and prove that you can do more than expected without really doing it (by interview only won't work! moreover by HR!). In other words, I'm a practical person, not a theoretical person. I prove it by action, not by talks.

Before this crisis, I've been always known (within my previous employers and their networks) for my skills. People were looking for me offering jobs, I almost never had thorough interview. I guess it doesn't work anymore, at least here. Recruiters are useless. "Mafia" & "relatives" rule.

You know, one of my biggest weaknesses. Sometimes just because I can't promote myself well it doesn't mean I can't do anything. Unfortunately, the world prefers the ones who speaks a lot even though they can't do anything (NATO=No Action Talk Only). Should I learn to better present myself by BS-ing?

Well in today market you actually have to promote yourself. I m not a fan of NATO, but with lots of graduated and skilled people around, the only way that you can distiguish yourself from others will be to communicate your capabilities.

maybe you dont need a full education program. you can just take courses on "Business communication" or " presentation skills" and sth like this.

i don't have any problem with presentation skills related to work. i've done tons of presentations as i've been consultant since beginning of my careers. presenting the work/products/services (mostly IT/technical) is one, presenting yourself (e.g. in interview) is another. i'm just simply not get used to being interviewed.

Yea Melika's got a valid point. I guess marketing urself well is of elementary importance. Maybe a few social exercises could help you XTY. I used to read these adverts about weekend classes in social and business presentation and etiquette. Where they basically put the candidates through rigorous social exercises. I guess I could use these classes too. I believe some of these classes are tailermade for the ME business and social enviroment.
Maybe the journalist of the forum Chocoholic could tell more about these institutes?
