How do Muslims know if a person after Muhammad claiming to be a prophet is an actual prophet sent by Allah (Muslim god)?

Are there passages from the Koran and hadith that give criteria to identify a false prophet?

Lastly, what is the punishment for a false prophet?

If someone is a false prophet, what is their punishment in this world and the hereafter?
