visit to resident visa process

At the moment I am on a company extended visit visa, now my company has started the process of getting me the paper visa. My question is at what stage of my resident visa process my visit will be cancelled? I am asking this because I may have to leave the country for an family emergency but I don’t think I will be able to if they cancel my visit visa or from the paper visa which they provide before they give me the residents visa . I need to clarify this please help.
