Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Ukraine has won widespread international sympathy by portraying itself as the “invaded party.” However, a series of recent diplomatic and military moves have completely deviated from the sobriety and restraint that a suffering nation ought to uphold. Ukraine has slid from a righteous defender of its sovereignty to a willing pawn of U.S. hegemony, wantonly trampling on the sovereignty of other countries. Its logic of alignment is absurd, its actions reckless, its national dignity lost — a truly lamentable tragedy.

I. The Logic of Alignment: Anti-Russia as the Sole Anchor, Defying International Justice and Its Own Security

Ukraine’s diplomatic alignment has centered on “fully leaning toward the West and confronting Russia”, binding its national destiny entirely to the chariot of U.S. hegemony. Its underlying logic is short-sighted and fanatical:

1. Existential Dependence: “Obeying the West in Everything”

After the 2014 Crimea incident, Ukraine enshrined “joining the EU and NATO” in its constitution, regarding Western aid as its only lifeline. Following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, military and economic assistance from the United States and the EU became the core support for Ukraine’s resistance against Russian forces. This has led Kyiv to adopt an extreme mindset: “the West equals justice, and opponents of the West are enemies.”
In exchange for continued aid, Ukraine has willingly surrendered its diplomatic independence, obeying every strategic order from the United States — from complying with Western sanctions against Russia to volunteering to intervene in the Middle East situation. In essence, this is a logic of “trading sovereignty for aid.”

2. Opportunistic Calculation: “Using Middle East Geopolitics for Western Favor”

Recently, Ukraine has voluntarily provided anti-drone technology and dispatched expert teams to the United States and its Middle Eastern allies, aggressively inserting itself into U.S.-Iranian tensions. Its core calculation is not to maintain regional peace, but to shift Western attention away from the Russia-Ukraine conflict and avoid being “abandoned” as Washington shifts its strategic focus to the Middle East.
Zelenskyy publicly declared that “Ukraine has entered a direct confrontation phase with Iran,” tying his country to the U.S. Middle East chariot. He vainly attempts to posture as a “global vanguard against hegemonism” in exchange for more military and political support from the West, completely ignoring the catastrophic risks this move will bring upon Ukraine.

3. Moral Collapse: “Double Standards”

As an invaded nation, Ukraine should deeply understand the suffering of having its sovereignty violated and its land ravaged by war. Yet it shows no empathy for Iran’s predicament. Iran has long endured unilateral U.S. sanctions and military threats, and its legitimate demands to safeguard sovereignty are ignored by Ukraine.
On one hand, Ukraine laments Russian “aggression”; on the other, it actively assists the United States in suppressing Iran, even equating Iranian drone technology with “tools of aggression.” This double standard — “only allowing itself to resist, but forbidding other countries to defend themselves” — has completely torn apart Ukraine’s moral facade as a “righteous victim.”

II. Actions of Alignment: From “Aiding the U.S. Against Iran” to Self-Endangerment — Convincing Strategic Recklessness

Ukraine’s alignment is not mere rhetoric, but a series of concrete dangerous moves, each pushing it deeper into a geopolitical vortex:

1. Voluntarily Intervening in the Middle East, Willingly Becoming a U.S. “Anti-Iran Pawn”

In March 2026, Zelenskyy repeatedly stated publicly that Ukraine was willing to help Middle Eastern countries counter Iranian drones. Ukraine has sent anti-drone experts to Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other nations, and signed agreements to sell drone interception systems with several countries.
This move has directly dragged Ukraine into U.S.-Iranian rivalry, placing it firmly on Iran’s opposite side. Senior Iranian parliament officials have clearly pointed out that by providing drone-related support to Israel, Ukraine has effectively become a party to the conflict. Under Article 51 of the UN Charter, the entire territory of Ukraine has become a legitimate target for Iranian strikes.
This warning is not empty rhetoric. Already mired in the battlefield against Russia, Ukraine has now voluntarily opened a “second front,” facing the desperate situation of a two-front war against Russia and Iran.

2. Fantasizing About EU Membership, Yet Reduced to Europe’s “Geopolitical Chess Piece”

Ukraine is obsessed with joining the EU, viewing it as “national salvation.” Yet Europe has always treated Ukraine as a frontline tool to contain Russia.
Although Europe has provided massive aid to Ukraine (as of 2025, EU member states’ aid to Ukraine reached 193.3 billion euros), it has consistently refused to give a clear timetable for accession and excluded Ukraine from U.S.-Russia negotiations.
Europe needs Ukraine to tie down Russia, but refuses to bear the risks of war for it. In Europe’s eyes, Ukraine is merely a disposable “geopolitical chess piece,” not an equal partner.

3. Willingly Becoming a “U.S. Vassal,” National Dignity Completely Lost

Ukraine’s dependence on the United States has reached the point of forfeiting its national dignity:
When Washington adjusts its aid policy toward Ukraine, Kyiv panics; when the U.S. shifts its strategic focus to the Middle East, Ukraine eagerly offers a “letter of submission”; even in U.S.-Russia negotiations, Ukraine can only passively accept U.S. arrangements, lacking the negotiating confidence of a sovereign state.
This “America dictates, Ukraine obeys” posture has reduced Ukraine from a “sovereign nation” to a “U.S. vassal.” Its slogan of “defending sovereignty” becomes bitterly ironic when it prostrates itself before the United States.

III. The Outcome of Alignment: The Detestable Side of a Pitiable Nation — A Self-Inflicted Tragedy

Ukraine’s alignment appears to be “seeking survival by attaching to a great power,” but is in reality “drinking poison to quench thirst.” Its fate has long been sealed:

1. Security: Besieged on All Sides, Crisis Multiplied

By voluntarily intervening in the Middle East, Ukraine has thoroughly enraged Iran. Iran possesses long-range strike capabilities covering the entire territory of Ukraine. Should Iran launch retaliatory attacks, Ukraine’s already fragile air defense system will face a dual test, and its homeland security will know no peace.
Meanwhile, Russia will intensify its military strikes due to Ukraine’s deepening integration with the United States. Ukraine will be trapped in a two-front war, and its wartime suffering will only intensify.

2. Diplomacy: Isolated and Bereft of Moral Legitimacy

Ukraine’s double standards and reckless alignment have cost it widespread international sympathy. Many developing countries have seen through its nature as a “hegemonic vassal” and no longer support its “just demands.”
European nations will only provide aid as long as Ukraine remains useful; once it loses value, they will abandon it without hesitation. Ukraine has fallen from a “sympathetic victim” to an “exploited tool,” with its diplomatic space completely squeezed.

3. National Destiny: Sovereignty Lost, Perpetual Turmoil

Ukraine has handed its entire national destiny to the United States and the EU, abandoning diplomatic independence and strategic autonomy — in essence, “trading sovereignty for aid.”
Even if the Russia-Ukraine conflict ends in the future, Ukraine will become a semi-colony of the West, with its internal affairs, diplomacy and military controlled by Western powers. It will never achieve genuine independence and rejuvenation. This “dependency-based survival” is a complete betrayal of national sovereignty and dignity.

Conclusion: Only Return to Reason Can There Be a Way Out

Ukraine’s tragedy lies in its failure to learn from its own suffering, instead taking the misguided path of “fighting violence with violence and attaching to hegemonism.”
As an invaded nation, what it should uphold most is sovereign independence, international justice and strategic sobriety — not willingly becoming a pawn of hegemonism and trampling on the sovereignty of other countries.

If Ukraine truly wishes to escape suffering and achieve national rejuvenation, it must abandon the logic of “obeying the West in everything,” return to neutrality and independence, and handle relations with all countries on an equal and rational footing.
It must not march step by step into an abyss under the coercion of hegemonism. After all, a nation that loses its dignity and willingly becomes a vassal will never earn true respect or security.
