Diplomacy: Palestinian Strategy

Diplomacy: Palestinian strategy Aug 30, 2011
The diplomatic pressure is building on Israel ahead of next month's UN vote on Palestinian sovereignty.

A strategy document now reveals why it will be difficult for the US to veto the vote, according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz. The strategy is to go down a diplomatic route and not an armed struggle - and tackling head on the rather simple issues of ending the Israeli Military Occupation. (See previous threads on how all the issues aren't complicated and have been addressed).

Borders, status of Jerusalem, refugees right of return and compensation all addressed:

..
Most of the document’s authors support the option of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital and a fair arrangement that will fulfill the right of return and the compensation of the Palestinian refugees. The document rejects the possibility of continuing the status quo, maintaining that the endless negotiations provide cover for expanding the settlements and consolidating the occupation. The authors also erase from the agenda the option of a Palestinian state with temporary borders and limited sovereignty, under effective Israeli control.

If the strategy of a diplomatic struggle for Palestinian independence − including sanctions, turning to the International Criminal Court and nonviolent resistance as in Egypt and Tunisia − does not change the situation, the group recommends switching to what the document calls Plan B: dismantling the Palestinian Authority and restoring responsibility for the West Bank’s inhabitants to Israel. The authors are not ignoring the price their public would pay for that, but wonder what honorable option would remain.

If it turns out that this option is unattainable, the authors recommend working toward a model of a binational state or democratic state without distinction between Israel and Palestinian citizens. Another possibility is a confederation between Jordan and the Palestinian state

It will be hard to spin these facts, but I'm sure we'll see the usual attempts.

A confederation with Jordan would be best. Jordan=Palestine and Palestine=Jordan.

A parliamentary report in Israel is critical of the governments handling of the Palestinian diplomatic moves...

Knesset report slams Israel's preparations for Palestinian statehood bid

Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee report, commissioned by Kadima MK Shaul Mofaz, says government 'failed to prepare accordingly' for the UN vote later this month.

A harsh and pessimistic report by the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee warns that faulty preparations by the government may result in Israel's standing being undermined when the Palestinians seek recognition as a state from the UN General Assembly later this month.

According to the report, commissioned by the committee chairman, MK Shaul Mofaz (Kadima), the government "did not prevent what could have been prevented, and afterward failed to prepare accordingly."

Interesting how the diplomatic moves by the Palestinians is causing the Israelis so much grief - on the one hand some are dismissing it as irrelevant and a nuisance, others saying it will scupper the peace process (what a laugh), and yet on the ground there appears to be panic about how to deal with this.

It should be an interesting month on the diplomatic front.

Interesting article from Ha'aretz:

Senior leader of the Islamist movement says his group rejects Abbas' UN bid since it would create a state only in West Bank and Gaza and not in all of historic Palestine.

Yes, FD - so what is your point?

Surely you're not going to side with what this Hamas spokesman is saying and oppose the diplomatic moves for a formal recognition of a two state solution?

In Northern Ireland, there still are republicans who want a united Ireland and oppose the deal made by Sinn Fein and the British and Unionists - but that didn't stop the diplomatic solution in the end.

There are extremists in the Israeli government who similarly want to keep all of occupied Palestine (and perhaps even some of Jordan too) - isn't that an interpretation of the Likud constitution, IIRC?

What is your point?
