Note - Industrial grade farming could not be carried out by the afghans, the infrastructure is obviously from foreign companies.

Shame that.

As the video in Afghans for Peace thread showed, things aren't going well over there.

Back when the Taliban were in power (and the US were courting them and trying to persuade them to allow a gas pipeline to be built), in 2001* - the UN reported :

JALALABAD, Afghanistan (February 15, 2001 8:19 p.m. EST
U.N. drug control officers said the Taliban religious militia has nearly wiped out opium production in Afghanistan -- once the world's largest producer -- since banning poppy cultivation last summer.

A 12-member team from the U.N. Drug Control Program spent two weeks searching most of the nation's largest opium-producing areas and found so few poppies that they do not expect any opium to come out of Afghanistan this year.

*In March 2001 Taliban representatives were guests in the USA, and one gave an interview to the NYT:

Sadly, the only known therapy for heroine addiction is replacement therapy with methadone (alternative substance ), but it would be un-affordable by the impoverished locals, those poor guyz are going to most probably die from a drug overdose :?
