Help ... A crashed External HDD Apr 18, 2007
I need help on how can I retrieve the data from it, I bought it 6 months ago (250GB almost half of is used).

The PC can't see it when I connect it to USB but it has power.

Make: Western Digital MyBook (now it's my nightmare :x )

Delete your USB cache, if any. Start the computer in Safe Mode, check Event Logs to see if there is any kind of error USB error or driver failure

If you have another computer, plug it in there and see if it gives you any action. Since its USB, there's very little you can do. Unless you crack open the MyBook case, take the drive out and use a USB 2.0 to IDE cable and read it that way.

It could be that the firewire port on your MyBook case has gone bad and its not the hard drive.

There are a lot of softwares out there that will help you recover your data but you have a hardware issue. The Data recovery will have to wait until you fix the hardware issue.

Do you have any drive with same drive letter ( i.e F:\ ) by default.

Does it even show you the : Usb device found icon near the clock/taskbar

as soupi said, try it on other pc, if that doesnt work, you need to rip its shells.

Thank you for your informative response.

I already tried connecting to another PC but got same results (when powering up I hear 3 ticks and I get no USB detection in the PC), as you said I assume it's a hardware probelm where the internal disk should be taken out and examined.

I sent to to a workshop , I'm waiting for the result now.

I had a similar problem with a HHD tta i newly bought.

It was UNFORMATTED.

So i plugged it in...windows recodnized it and everything. But when i went to my computer and opened it...i didnt find it there.

Later on i found out how to make the drive letter appear again.

Right click MY COMPUTER, select MANAGE

select DISK MANAGEMENT

And you will find the extra drive there....right click...create new partion...next next next...and quick format.

theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen the drive letter appears.

You had a generic hard drive which will not show up unless formatted and a drive letter assigned.

The Western Digital MyBook has pre-installed software that installs on your machine once you plug it in. Unlike the generic hard drive, you don't have to go to Computer Management to make it visible

now this is common with external hard drives & even sometimes with partitions.

However, if you format the unrecognized drive, you can still recover old files on the disk, as zero's are not written through out the disk/sectors, using softwares like, Final Data, Pc Inspector File recovery & so on.

If it is a hardware problem you can try the old myth of putting it up in a freezer & trying to run it before it warms up & defrosts. Worked once for me though.

There are only a few specialists in dubai who can play with the internal disks without damaging it & recover your stuff, others are all bluff, lets say the folks in khaleej center.

try them: www.drd.ae , i heard they are good.

best of luck
