A few questions..... Aug 07, 2006
Hi, Im moving over to Dubai next month and have a few unanswered questions that im hoping someone can help with....

Can you buy alcohol from any shops or supermarkets?
Is there any good tattoo parlours??
Would you say that a car is essential if travelling between the airport area and the beach?

Thanks

No.
No.
No unless that's a regular journey - taxis get expensive after a while.

(Alcohol Q) Only in licensed shops like Duty Free, Bar/Pub in Hotel, or you can try buying it in Fujairah(but thats kinda illegal or you will be asked for an alcohol license, Im sure the Vet's here knows a lot about this, wait for their replies.)
(Tatoo Q) Dont worry, Dubai is a city.
(Car Q) Yes it is essential,in everyday life actually.

Don't think Arnie is judging you Zam.

Poster was asking Dubai specific questions so no there's no shop or supermarket in Dubai where you can purchase alcohol.

There are people who do tatoos here but you will be very (very) hard pressed to find an actual parlour.

No, not essential but as Shaf said it would get mighty expensive. Unless you are living near the beach areas - then you can walk.

Thanks for this guys! Think I'll just buy a few bottles of vodka from duty free before I come over....and get the tattoo done in the UK before as well....better safe than sorry especially where your health is concerned!!
As for the car, I'll see how it goes without one initially!

Limit is one bottle (if you're not Muslim) but you'll probably get away with a couple. There's a good enough selection in arrivals.

Rent a car is a good way to start - there's a topic about it somewhere already.

Duty free is not a 'licensed shop'. Buying alcohol in a bar/pub is not for home consumption. Last I checked Fujeirah is another emirate.

Dubai is a city? - Enlightening!

Not everyone in Dubai has/needs a car for everyday life.

Of spirits  ? I thought that was for wine.

I'll correct my original answer to the first question. No you can't buy alcohol in supermarkets. Yes you can buy alcohol in MMI and A&E licensed alcohol shops - after you get an alcohol license. Start practising now, most people fail the first couple of times they do the drinking exam...
