Question though - how are tourists supposed to get one?

Take the <div> thing off the link if you want to view the link. The guy in the link is an idiot. If I'm not mistaken, hotels are licensed so that the tourists don't need to be.

Strictly in accordance with the law even visitors require a "Temporary Liquor License" which is easily available from Deira Police Station. This actually is only a problem when their is a problem, first thing police will ask for if a person has been drinking is "Liquor License" I am talking out of knowledge and experience here where one of our visiting customers was arrested for not having the necessary license.

That's all good, Sage, and I know we've discussed this Ad Nauseum. How do you explain Duty Free then? The temp license would require a visa stamp, which you would not have at Duty Free.

You have to write it on the application form.

As I said, "Their is only a problem when their is a problem", don't ask me to explain the logic behind it because I can't.

Sage is right, there aint no logic.

Its when trouble hits and booze is involved, the question will be where is the license.

So if a Muslim walks in to get a Liquor License, all he has to do is put himself in the application as a Non-Muslim??!! No questions asked??

Unless the Residency Visa shows the religion!

I don’t know, I never had one!

As you know, there is a lot of Christian Arabs, in Dubai, with Muslim names!!!

Dubai should either be dry or let people buy and consume alcohol. This ridiculous licensing system does nothing but generate money and screw people over, like temporary visitors.

As the monopolized Dubai alcohol suppliers are directly owned by the Maktoum family and net them many millions each year, this one will die a quiet death. The nutter in the story is from Abu Dhabi and the rules are different there.

Large ones all round!

Residency visa shows your religion, so as long as you didn't sepcify muslim on there you'll have no problems.

I have seen Emiratis in kandourahs buying alcohol in liquor stores. no problem at all. hypocrisy at its best.
And for expats in Dubai, new year celebration would be better somewhere else

up to 5 years in prison for consumming alcohol without a licence!
Compared to a couple of years ago, you dont see anymore expats boasting about Dubai. It s all over and everybody knows it.

At least Dubai is stopping the deception, as it becomes obvious now that spending New Year in Dubai is the same as in Riyadh, people can chose and go instead to Thailand, Singapore or India.
