Just being pathetically Cynic.. but one shouldnt discount the political mileage and good will that Dubai would gain in the international circuit. Thanks to what money can not but charity can.

I recall reading that Bob Geldof was devastated to find that about 70% of his Live Aid for Africa funds were misappropriated along their way to their final destination. He called this the high cost of giving aid - as there was little they could do. He ended up bribing a lot of people with his own money to ensure the aid got there.

The sad fact is, a lot of these places need aid because of their own corrupt governments take advantage of the situation, and see the aid as a means of releasing them from their own internal social responsibility to their people.

If it gets to where it needs to go, it should be applauded as a fantastic effort. If less than 50% of it gets to those who need it, it was just another marketing exercise for Dubai.

Call me cynical, but I have had a reasonable amount of exposure to aid organisations in my time, and have born witness to misappropriation.

The Red Cross is one such organisation that is now so top heavy, it spends a tremendous amount of its aid money on paying the salaries of the 'administration'.

I am right up there with you on this one.

We do have to applaud the generosity of HH Sheikh Mohammed, which I most certainly do.

Agree more should be done but its not an easy job. At least he IS doing something.

It wasn't that long ago labourer's were being transported around in open back cattle truck type trucks.

The government only did something about it when the Sultan of Oman seen this on a visit and made his views known on this mis-treatment.

Then it hit the newspapers around the world and hey presto the buses were changed.

The same went for the 3 hour break in the summer months, labourers were dying through heat exhaustion, only when this was brought to the attention of the pubic was something actually done.

True Compassion or action through embarrassment???

To be honest, how many people really act out of compassion these days? I mean compare to those act through embarrasment. Look at the corporate world today, isn't it the same?

One of human's biggest flaw: we learn to regret.

A person of honour wouldn't give someone some worthless land, and then take it back when it becomes useful. Queue: Jebel Ali Sailing Club, Dubai Water Ski Club, Dubai Country Club, Exiles Rugby Club. They are more comonly referred to by the now outdated term of Indian giver.
Oh sorry, Sheik Mo wasn't the one that gifted the land was he?

Are you sure that the land was actually given, or was it loaned?, you should check before you make such statements.

Sage,
I am not sure exactly what the term 'gifted' means. It is obviously open to interpretation.
hack,
I am not/wasn't a member of any of these clubs so it doesn't affect me.
I just think that it was wrong and I expected better.
Sorry for passing judgement.

A beautiful land, and beautiful people Feb 04, 2008
If the land and the peoples were not worth while, then there would be no one at the gates asking permission to gain entrance. That is why for so many countless lives come each day to ask and work and offer their many talents and offer what they can in Dubai. It is not only to make a living, but to offer an exchange that will prove of merit long after that job has been retired from and they have travelled back to their points of origin.

i think the Sheikh is playing SimCity3000 :D the guys doing a great job. if i was in his seat and had so much money I would be making Dubai the next Babylon. There are ppl below him who have mis-used their powers.
He is the ruler of Dubai and he should just help these labourers by having a few simple rules like making sure every bus has an ac for the labourers. or better living conditions for the labourers. If you go to a labour camp you will be shocked to see 20 ppl in the size of your living room.
