999 number being abused Jan 21, 2009
Dubai: Inquiring about whether a certain brand of bottled drinking water is healthy or not is one of the many trivial calls that Dubai Police's Command and Control Room receives at 999 - a dedicated number allocated to emergency calls only. .........

Some examples of trivial calls include:

How can I check the credit on my mobile phone?
Is a certain brand of water bottle healthy or not?
I have been looking for a parking lot for the past three hours and when I found one, another motorist took it, what do I do?
My dog/horse has gone missing, what should i do?
What is the speed limit on a certain road?

Other calls include worried girlfriends calling 999 saying their boyfriends have left them after personal disputes.........................

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally I got a call from the police just 2 days ago. someone called 999 to let me know that my hazard lights were left on in the parking. I am definitely thankful in a way to the good Samaritan, but I was honestly surprised that the police entertained such a "non-emergency" issue. They do have a limited number of call-takers and to tie up them up with such issues makes it difficult for people who may be in more critical need of emergency help

THey should have a second number for trivial things... Like a local help line.

Expensive, but problem solved.
