I'm outta here Jan 01, 2009
Having spent over 6 weeks over here - I've decided that Dubai really is not a place for someone who wants to make the most of life..unless that is to visit hotels, malls and drive around everywhere!

It just doesn't make sense to have people living here...everyone is so irrate and the mentality is medieval..

Good luck to everyone and thanks to all who pm'd me in response to my earlier post..

London here i come (despite credit crunch, at least it's real and we know what's going on most of the time!)

xx

I think people will start coming home...a lot of people came out here for the tax free income only to return home and enjoy life there as there is more of a buzz in Europe, America and Oz. Now that the cost of living is so high, it doesn't really warrant living out here. Dubai will be dead soon and tourism will decline with it...people will realise that it is only a short stop place, not somwhere to form a base and certainly not a place to learn about culture etc etc...its good for business, spas (maybe a bit of shopping though London, Rome and NY kicks it to the ground)...sorry to say but it is very very tacky.

I'm glad this is not my home as i would probably not know any better..

I salute you for your brave point of view. And I wish you the best in 2009, whether in London, Dubai, or anywhere. It's good to know what you want and to work on it.

Unfortunately most of us (in Dubai) would never conclude a discussion of how good (or bad) the city is. Every one has a different set of objectives, expectations, and even turn-ons. We usually forget this simple fact when we discuss and end up empty handed...

I disagree with you. Even though it's not clear where it's heading now, and the world recession has made a lot of changes that may or may not be dealt with wisely. But cities do not fall in a blink of an eye.

Things would be more difficult, less interesting. Shopping may withdraw, people would think twice before coming to Dubai. And that's time for city to either "evolve", change patterns, get more balanced; Or get outnumbered by somewhere else.

People do not come here just for the sake of it. They are here for a better life and if they didn't find it they would look somewhere else, sooner or later.

For those who chose to live here, despite it's not home and it's not permanent and all; Pragmatically speaking: They need to do some effort to make the city more tolerable. Even if it's impossible for us (individually) to make rents less and wages more...

Hey..when i say dead - i mean quite and even more soulless than it is now. I can't believe how quite everywhere is. I don't mean to keep comparing to London, NY etc etc but altough things are REALLY bad in London and people are not spending, there is still such a good buzz to it - people are actually nicer to each other now socialise more. The financial crisis has wrecked many lives but it has also brought out the best in a lot of people as well. I don't think Dubai will fall as it has sufficient financial backing from the other emirates - I'm just saying that the atmosphere will be even more crap..and in a city where everything is temporary this will bring the worst out in people. Just my humble opinion.

When I first came to Dubai, I had a two bedroom apartment; swimming pool, sauna, gym, car parking space and security, for Dhs 36,000!

The thing is, my son was born here and I would much rather see him grow in Dubai than become a chav in south London!

I agree with you. There are many reasons here to make people less interested in socializing but I guess there are also many nice and friendly people here :)

No one calls Dubai home, and maybe that's why people are not having that "good buzz". Although there is nothing to prevent them :)

Not everyone lives in South London and not everyone who lives there is a chav either. Being born and raised in the UK gives a child a more realistic perspective in life. I would never raise my kids here - it's like the Truman show! True it's safer but it just doesn't prepare kids for the future...I'm sure deep down inside you are glad you had the chance to be brought up in a western country where at least you have some level of independent thought and freedom of speech!

Well ultimately, life is a pretty subjective experience. So I respect your opinion as it's based on your own experience here and you seem to have thought it through sufficiently.

I guess as with any new city, Dubai is what you make of it.

I was lucky enough to have friends here when I moved over, which helped me settle in much easier than it would normally be. I've been here for a year now, and I really couldn't see myself moving back to London, and I lived is chiswick, which is as nice as London gets.

P.s. I hope I never get used to the awful customer service, the amazing lack of common courtesy and the daily dance with death on the SZR.

I think Dubai is great for singles who like to work long hours and then hang out at the beach, restaurants, clubs and malls in their free time. For families and people who love outdoors, culture, and entertainment found outside of malls, the place is really lacking in my opinion. And no kidding about the driving there - very stressful just getting into the car every day.

Yeah I'm pretty glad to have been born and brought up in the UK. You said 'true it's safer..' I agree 100% - and it's up to the parents to 'prepare kids for the future.'
I'm not sure what this 'realistic perspective in life' is.

Aye, it's a tough one for sure.
I really did not want my kids here when They were reaching later teens.
But the UK is very different place to the one we grew up in.

I grew up here for a while and I have to say I absolutely loved it and I was gutted when we left and always wanted to come back. I would rather bring kids up here than in the UK (especially now it's even worse than it was when I was young!)

I think it takes time to get used to it here and make some good friends. I don't spend every night in the mall . I love going to the cinema, going for coffee/dinner with friends, the beach. I have been camping and desert driving and all sorts. I think life is what you make of it wherever you go. Don't get me wrong Dubai pisses me off bigtime sometimes and I always used to compare to the UK and think the grass is greener, but when I go home and see people, 2 weeks is definitely enough for me and I am dying to get back. I look at my friends at home who go on the same nights out week after week and do the same things since school and I am just so glad I got out!!

Sorry Dubai didn't work out for you. It's not for everyone though. Good luck.

Aye. I'm from Stockton-on Tees (Birthplace of the railways). More specifically Norton, home of the world famous "Top House" and duck pond

It's the small things that make all the difference. People talk about 'lifestyle' in Dubai, but I prefer to call it 'living style'.
I don't expect to go home tonight and find someone has kicked off my front door and relieved me of my stereo.
The police don't pick on me when they see me in my motor playing King Tubby dubs.
I don't expect to be knifed by some twat in a hoodie top either.

And, fresh fish here is so cheap! Anyone who isn't eating a better quality of food needs a slap!
