Sports "associations"

Sports "associations" Apr 22, 2007
I got to discuss sports "associations" with some folks. That is: what country you mostly associate when you hear of a team sport: Here is the "consensus" (without too many thrown punches).

Cricket = India
Rugby = Australia
Sailing = New Zeland
Basketball = USA
Baseball = USA
Hockey = Canada
Football/Soccer = Brazil
American Football = by Definition
Formula One (car) = ? Monaco (forgot already)

P.S. the "association" does not mean who invented the game (e.g. footfall) or who is the current champion.

I think Hockey and Football/Soccer are probably different for most people (not your regular sports fan) but the intial association for Hockey and football/soccer is as listed.

What say you?

I think it depends on where you come from as to what you associate. My own personal view is.

Cricket = Australia
Rugby = New Zealand
Sailing = The Netherlands (don't ask me why)
Basketball = USA
Baseball = Japan
Hockey = The Netherlands
Ice Hockey = Canada
Football/Soccer = Germany
American Football = er.. not sure
Formula 1 = Italy

Or you could flip it around:

Australia = Cricket
India = Cricket
NZ = Rugby
USA = Nascar
England = Whinging
Ireland = Hurling
Netherlands = Hockey
South Africa = Rugby
France = Football

as an example.

I won't argue with most of that list. Although I will say,

Soccer/Football - Global - It's the world's game. Even here in North America, it's not huge for spectators but it's massive for participation. Since The World Cup in the US in 1994 the game continues to grow exponentially.

And do the Canadians a solid and call it hockey, not ice hockey. Drives us crazy. Field hockey is field hockey. Ball hockey is ball hockey and ice hockey is just plain old hockey!

Good ones. These did not come up. I think "drinking" was mentioned but the debaters were an irishman, german and scot so I left mid-way thru the tournament. I'm due to check in a couple of days time to see who is leading.

Yes for baseball and basketball (NBA). For the rest of the sports, we'd watched them when the cable satellite era started.

NBA was a hot thing before & until now. The whole clan became divided. Men wanna watch NBA finals, women wanna watch drama series. Naugthy men in the family bought extra remote control; TV was almost set on fire.

ASC was in the middle and confused.
