Sure, but nobody instantly jumps into finding out a persons character.

Anyway, you're 50 times more likely to meet your ideal partner at work than you are in a nightclub. That says a lot.

Well, I am not fond of going to nightclubs and disco bars. With regards to finding your partner at work, i don't think so. :? What's an "ideal" partner?

Well, I didn't say you *will* find your partner at work, but for a vast majority it happens. Perhaps because you get to know people better.

An ideal partner is somebody who doesn't throw a drink in your face :-)

A nightclub is definitely not an ideal place to find individuals of quality.

One has a good chance of meeting interesting people at the Dubai stock exchange, the race-track and Magrudy's. Or so I've been told.

Night clubs are not the place to meet new people and the likelihood of you being able to strike up a sensible conversation under bombardment from 200 decibels of Oomph Oomph sound system make it impossible anyway.

Try coffee shops. You will often see guys sitting just reading the paper or a book and chilling out. If a girl were to walk up and say 'Hi, mind if I sit here?' normally the guy will oblige. If he is 'spoken for' or just not interested or not wanting company, he will also probably say straight out. That saves a girl wasted time and effort and a quick glance at his reading material will probably give you a clue to the type of person he is.

Hi I'm new to the forum and have been reading this thread with interest. I've been in Dubai 9months now and am thoroughly depressed with the mentality out here.

I came here on my own, not knowing anyone here and for the first couple of months I had to force myself to go out to places after work to try and meet people to make friends / find a boyfriend. But I just got so fed up with the amount of guys that would approach me thinking that I was a 'lady of negotiable affection' and the girls who would be nasty to me and ignore me because they presumed the same. I received the same treatment if I tried to approach them, be it male or female, in a bar, coffee house, shop, gym (well not the hooker accusation in the gym, but just being totally ignored) or otherwise. Most of it down to the mindset that 'obviously a blonde female on her own in a bar/coffee house etc must be a hooker'. It was very upsetting.

If anyone had just taken a minute to have a normal conversation with me, they'd have found out I'm a nice girl from Scotland with a law degree and working in the oil and gas industry!

I got so fed up of it, that I gave up on the whole thing and started spending my evenings either working late or sitting at home alone.

Then it got to about July and I realised how lonely I was without even a person I could call a friend! So, I forced myself to go out again, not anticipating the summer crowd. Middle-aged married men with their wife and kids back home to UK/USA etc for the summer and wanting a bit of summer fun on the side - no thanks! Also, I was still being asked if I was 'open for business' which was getting a bit tiring.

Recently, work has been a little quiet so I've started trying to socialise again in the evenings. It seems the guys out here have a new chat up line - "what airline do you work for?". I am so fed up of explaining to them that I'm not an air steward and then have them walk away suddenly disinterested, that I've just started to reply "Emirates". I'm actually so fed-up of it now that when I go out because I fancy a wee drink, I am known as 'the girl with the book' in most bars, as I take a book to read with me as a sign that I'm there to relax and not for business / to be picked up.

Work-wise, I made a pretty decent move to come to Dubai (apart from the drop in salary and the increased cost of living). Personally/socially, I spend 99% of my time hating it here. With most people treating this place as though they're permanently on holiday and most guys (well the ones that I have met and the stories that I've heard from others) believe it's ok to treat you badly and just mess you around have a fling, most of them already seeing at least one other girl. Where are all the nice guys hiding?!?!?!!!

I know you saying you feeling lonely but sadly even in here you will get unwanted messages now!! So be careful there are a lot of perverts here who never post but just send private messages to girls. There are so many Emirates girls that invade the bars in squadrons though, you can understand why people might think that.

The worst thing about some (not all) Emirates girls is though, they don't get paid a lot, and when are in a group situation they make an early departure before the bill arrives.

Very annoying, I think they get together and swap secrets on how to trade on their looks in Dubai.

Perhaps I'm being harsh, but this is all from individual experience.

I'll bare this in mind Ian - which bars are these, erm purely to make sure I never venture to them when I'm next in Dubai, obviously!

Perhaps a lot easier if you just show me the next time I'm in town?? Purely in the interests of increasing the research on this topic, obviously!

Zooter, in the interest of science, Dr. D will take you on an expedition so that you can see the specimens in real life and observe their behaviour.

Purely, as I said, in the interest of science.

Oh dear...another of our scientific evenings involving fermented chemicals of dubious origin? Great!

Sal 3112: Stick with the forum girl, there are some really nice and very genuine people here (there are some arseholes as well!) but you will find the best of the best here! Its an old adage, however the Emirates Hosty thing breaks down to the standard rule...

There are 3 certainties in life:
Death
Taxes
and an Air Hostess!

Keep the faith!

It's great to hear all the stories and opinions from people here. I found that Longs is the worst place for people to expect you to be an Emirates Hostie if you're female... It's not too bad I guess. I know a couple of nice Emirates Hosties, but it's rather frustrating when everyone assumes that's what you are. It's even more frustrating when they're no longer interested when they find out I'm not!!! My theory for that is, a lot of guys like Hosties because it means the girl is away a lot, which means that they feel as though they are not tied to the girlie all the time, and while the cat's away... back to my theory that most guys in Dubai are players who seem to think it's perfectly acceptable to have more than one girl on the go at the same time.

I was sort of seeing a guy recently. About a week ago a small group of us went out, and we met up with this guy who was out with some of his work colleagues (it was all pre-arranged so that we could see each other). I soon realised how much of a player he was - when he thought I wasn't looking he was all over a girl that he worked with, but as soon as I was around he was all over me. I can't believe he thought he could get away with it. His excuse? "It's not like things between me and her are serious as there's been no sex". He thought it was perfectly ok to have as many girls as he wanted to on the go at the same time as long as he didn't have sex with them!!!

Kinda resigned to the fact that I'll have to wait until I'm somewhere better to find a partner. Either back home in the UK, or Australia (which is where I hope to go to next).

So what is the ratio like for western guys to western girls? It seems (from the forums and peoples comments) that there are a fair number of western girls, but not that many young, single western guys. Am I wrong here?

I guess I'll learn more when I visit.

Which bars/restaurants to go to? Nov 16, 2006
Ok, thanks for all the insights. I've watched "Desert Nights" last week-end. Hence I know, that I shouldn't expect any genuine Western expat females at "Cyclone"...

But where to go to? Where would one meet the genuine Western expat crowd?

Would you kindly provide me with your insights?

Best regards!
