A million questions

Hi We are moving to Dubai in the next couple of months with children. I have a million questions. Firstly we are a family with children and a dog, so we are hoping to find accomodation, preferably a villa with small garden ('cos I am not paper training a dog that is larger than me) and I hope the ki...

Thanx dbxsoul!! The dog is family and we have looked into getting him there which isn't really a big deal (except cost) but getting him home will mean one month's quarantine, so I guess we will have to stay about 12 years!! (He also spends nearly all day inside now.....snoring!) We have lived in par...

Thanks again for the info. You're like an encyclopaedia! :D Of course I have another question. This one is about medicines. It varies from country to country which medicines are bought over the counter or with prescription, so is there some website/list or something that has these medicines- cold an...

Thans again! Think we will bring a barbie, gas one, just hope there isn't a hose fitting prob. The differing "rules" between Sharjah and Dubai are interesting. A school has recently opened in Sharjah that we are interested in. Does the dress rule apply to children as well? Also the eating in public ...

Hi, there are quite a lot of schools but I guess it depends if you are talking about adult ed. or kids. These are secondary and primary schools I think. I haven't moved yet, but just trying to help! Al Mawakeb http://www.almawakeb.sch.ae American Academy http://www.dubaiacademy.org American S...

  Anyway, thanks again dbxsoul. Now alcohol- I am under the understanding we can't bring any in in a container but can any non-muslim visiting bring in a couple of bottles for friends?? I also thought I read that we can get a licence (however you spell that one) to drink in our own hom...

Hi It is about 2.5 years since we left Singapore and from the rents we paid then to what I can see that you can get in Dubai (we haven't arrived yet) Singapore is far more expensive. Cars are approx 3 times what you'd expect to pay in your home country and petrol was expensive. It is an easy place t...

My advice is as a starting point buy a Dubai Explorer book, now in its 9th edition and a Zappy explorer. Stacks of info in them. We haven't moved yet but will be soon!

Hi and thanks again dbxsoul. Actually we have just been to Dubai and I am shocked!! It is amazing!! Had a look around at some supermarkets and it looks reasonably priced to me-even alcohol is OK price wise (Singapore prices were much, much higher, so for a Muslim country I was quite surprised). Also ...

Also wilks there are heaps of schools under construction and not scheduled to open until September. It would be my guess they recruit many of there staff from the UK so I'd say you should be checking ads. at home. :)

Thanks for the replies! Can anyone help on temporary accomodation? We are looking at a serviced apartment in the Burj Dubai area, preferably. Is there any reasonably priced accomodation (with cooking facilities and a pool) until we can settle on a place to live? Also is there anything you wish you b...

dbxsoul was a fantastic source of info for me and thanx again mate! I've been here only two months but I guess as far as the shine wearing off I'll just have wait. At home kids have to be within your view and at arms length at all times but here during the school hols I saw kids of 10 to 12 going to the pictures on their own. My kids are safe and people are really nice to them and in shopping centre play areas you can pay and leave them....yes, I am serious!! ...

Agree-three prong UK/Sing. Also conversion plugs for any others are cheap and available in all supermarkets. Think twice about bringing too much electrical though as this is every man's dream an electrical heaven!

Hi Melissa dbxsoul mentioned Aussie tax. You are tax exempt I think if you work away for 2 years as a non-resident (you don't pay Aussie tax in that 2 years but if you come home within that period then you will have to pay tax on your previous earnings). As such you pay 10% flat tax on your interest...

Hi I think you could but it will be hard to coordinate. Your husband will have to have his visa first inorder to sponsor her and that could take a little longer than you think (and without sponsorship in Sing she will have to return home first, right?). Otherwise I think having a miad is like Sing w...

Apparently they are the same as the UK and I know definitely the same as Singapore. You can buy adaptors in every supermarket which is convenient like Union Coop and Choithrams-they also have adaptors for telephone plugs. Expedite....hmmm...are you good at queuing? An essential prerequisite here! I ...

I meant to tell you will have to get a UAE driver's permit/licence and depending on where you come from ie if you have a valid licence from a list of countries it is just a matter of paying the fee and getting a UAE one. I know Diamond Lease do rentals- http://www.diamondlease.com carlease@emirates....

Hi I think you'll find clothing same or cheaper and especially if it is on sale it seems to be a bargain. There are so many stores to choose from too so that is a bonus. Being blonde I don't think is such a big deal-nobody seems to care that much and I don't think you'll get anymore attention than y...

I think this must depend on where you come from. Compared to Australia taxis are a bargain and cheaper than anywhere I have lived or travelled in Asia except Japan though which was phenomenally expensive! Apparently renting/hiring a car is a good way to go if you are travelling alot...also buying a ...

Hi Food is not expensive but if you choose to eat out alot it will depend on where you choose to eat out. Well, I am Australian and I have been buying Aussie rib eye steak for DH32 per kg and it is cheaper than home and better quality-you pan fry it and it is great!! Hi For an idea of price look at the gulf news classifieds on line. Also once you are here you can look on pin up boards in all major supermarkets for a car.
