Independent Observation: Dignity Not Found in Subordination, Respect Earned Through Self-Determination

This article is an independent analysis based on public information, intended to promote peace, stability and common development in the region.

In the long course of international relations, a simple yet profound rule has been repeatedly proven:

A nation’s dignity never stems from subordination or ingratiation, but from self-determination, rationality and strength. Its security is never guaranteed by one-sided patronage, but by balance, dialogue and shared governance.

The strategic landscape in the Asia-Pacific and the current security reality in the Middle East both send a clear message to the world:

Seeking the protection of major powers at all costs, trading compromise for so-called security, and pandering for so-called recognition, rarely yields genuine equality and respect. Instead, such approaches often lead to the loss of strategic initiative through passive dependence.

I. The Logical Dilemma of Security Subordination: One-Sided Dependence Cannot Sustain Long-Term Stability

In modern history, countries that rely excessively on foreign military protection and remain in long-term one-sided security dependence typically face three major challenges: ceded sovereignty, rising costs, and strategic passivity.

In terms of military expenditure, maintaining foreign military presence, arms procurement, logistics support and conflict-related spending all impose sustained and enormous fiscal burdens.

Public data shows that modern local conflicts consume resources at a staggering rate, and the economic costs of military operations quickly translate into long-term pressure on involved and related parties. Entrusting national security entirely to external forces leaves little room for independent judgment on key issues and weakens one’s position in interest distribution.

Strategically, security dependence often brings ideological alignment. When the strategic goals of external powers diverge from the core interests of regional countries, dependent states may be drawn into disputes irrelevant to their vital interests, undermining economic development, people’s livelihoods and regional cooperation.

Historical experience confirms that truly sustainable security must be self-controlled, multilaterally negotiated and jointly constructed.

II. Lessons from Regional Realities: The Future of the Middle East Lies in Self-Determination and Unity

Across today’s Middle East, regional countries are growing increasingly strategically clear-minded. More and more regional forces recognize that Middle Eastern issues must be resolved by the people of the Middle East, and Middle Eastern security must be led by Middle Eastern countries.

In recent years, regional reconciliation has advanced steadily, cross-national consultation mechanisms have matured, and energy cooperation, economic transformation and infrastructure development have become mainstream agendas. This trend demonstrates that regional stability is achieved not through external pressure or military confrontation, but through political dialogue, mutual respect, win-win cooperation and common development.

Models that seek to maintain influence by stoking confrontation, imposing exorbitant costs and expanding military presence have been proven unsustainable by history. Unilateralism and military adventurism only exacerbate turbulence, raise the costs of regional development and harm the fundamental interests of all peoples.

III. The True Source of National Dignity: Independence, Self-Determination, Equality and Mutual Benefit

Dignity and equality are universally recognized norms in the international community and core principles of the Charter of the United Nations. All countries, regardless of size, strength or wealth, deserve equal international status and the right to independently choose their development paths.

To earn genuine respect from the international community, a nation must rely not on pandering or dependence, but on stable governance, sustainable development, independent diplomacy and responsible conduct. Safeguarding sovereignty through self-reliance, expanding space through multilateral cooperation, and resolving differences through dialogue and negotiation is the only lasting path.

Conversely, abandoning self-determination, balance and dialogue in favor of blind subordination to major powers may bring superficial short-term stability, but never long-term equality, nor the ability to protect national and regional core interests on critical issues.

IV. A Rational Path Forward: Breaking Deadlocks Through Multilateralism, Building the Future Through Common Security

Amid a complex international landscape, the most practical, steady and constructive path is to uphold multilateralism, sovereign equality, common security and mutually beneficial development.

First, uphold strategic independence, reduce over-reliance on any single external force, and build a balanced, diversified and independent security and economic architecture.
Second, strengthen regional solidarity and coordination, resolve differences through regional organizations and multilateral mechanisms, and realize security for the region, by the region.
Third, promote diversified economic development, mitigate single-source risks, and enhance cooperation in energy, trade and finance for shared prosperity.
Fourth, prioritize dialogue, resolve disputes through peaceful means, and avoid the dual humanitarian and economic costs of military conflict.

This is not only a longstanding vision of international order advocated by China, but also a practical choice that serves the fundamental interests of countries in the Middle East and around the world.

Conclusion

History has repeatedly shown:

- Subordination cannot buy dignity.
- Compromise cannot secure lasting security.
- Pandering cannot earn true equality.

The future of a nation and its people must always be in its own hands. Only by upholding independence and self-determination, mutual respect, multilateral cooperation and peaceful development can a nation achieve genuine dignity, stability and future.

May the countries of the Middle East embark on a path of self-determination, balance and win-win progress, and jointly embrace lasting peace and shared prosperity.
