Copts, Muslims clash in Cairo - 6 Copts dead? Mar 09, 2011
Interesting to see al-Jizya spin the persecution of Copts. 'Copts feel persecuted'. 'Copts say they suffer discrimination'.

Strangely, independent human rights groups aren't contacted to comment for this story. Perhaps the truth of the way Copts are treated in Egypt is not fit for print?

Anyways, following the attacks against Copts that resulted in the destruction of their church and Muslims coming back the next day to pray to their god at ground zero, Copts protested in Cairo only to be greeted by Muslim counter protesters who weren't too happy of Copts questioning their role as second class citizens.

At least one person has been killed in clashes between Christian Copts and Muslims in the Egyptian capital Cairo, a hospital official has said.

The death of Mina Fares Hanna on Tuesday occurred in the working-class district of Moqattam. It comes as at least 1,000 Copts gathered to protest the burning of a church last week.

It was the second burst of sectarian fighting in as many days and the latest in a string of violent protests over a variety of topics as simmering unrest continues nearly a month after mass protests led to the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak.

...

The violence was triggered by a feud between two families, which disapproved of a romantic relationship between a Christian man and a Muslim woman in Sol.

...

"Problems escalated in the village when a group of Muslims headed to the burned out church and conducted a mass prayer there," Maged Ibrahim, a local resident told state television.

Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin, reporting from the capital Cairo, said that Christians were demanding "an end to what they describe as discrimination by the state."

CAIRO: Conflicting reports are coming out of Egypt on Tuesday evening concerning violence and death in a Cairo neighborhood between Coptic Christians and religious conservatives who allegedly attacked a peaceful demonstration.

According to eye witnesses in the Manshiyet Nasr area – a poor shantytown on the outskirts of the city – at least 6 people have been killed, and over 200 injured from live ammunition and blasts that caused bricks to fall on people.

One eye witness, Talaat Ibrahim, told Bikya Masr that the army was responsible for the shooting and killing of Coptic demonstrators.

However, Masrawy news website, reported that the military intervened to end the clashes, which are still ongoing, between what they called “Salafist young people” and the Copts.

The exact details remain murky, but the violence and deaths have been confirmed.

The army has been reported to say that the situation is “under control.”

“At least 12 vehicles and four homes have been burned, all Coptic homes, by the angry Muslims,” said Ibrahim.
