Maternity in Dubai Feb 09, 2012
Hello,

I have moved to dubai in Jan 2012.
I am 6 weeks pregnant now and would like to have pre-natal, post-natal treatments and delivery in dubai.
I still have to get my residence visa stamped and apply for my health card. Since we are new to dubai i do not think we will have a Maternity insurance included.

Can you please help me in knowing
1. The best hospitals and their charges approx for pre-natal / post natal and delivery (private and govt)
2. How Long does it take to make a health card and the benefits of the health card
3. the hospital which you would advice for the maternity care

Thank you

1. The health card is only for use at public hospitals. I think you are 'covered' as soon as you get it.
The public system is not free for expats. You still need to pay.
Al Wasl is the public maternity hospital. On the good side it has the best equipment to deal will complications. Down side is that patient care can be poor compared to private. It depends a lot on what you expect also. Generally speaking, westerners rate it poorly, non-english speakers rate it highly.
Not sure about the cost, but it is a lot cheaper than private and was about AED 2000 several years ago. I think it has increased to maybe 4-5000 recently. One advantage with public is that the cost is a capped/fixed amount.

2. There are several private hospitals, The American and The Welcare being the most well known, and recent arrivals such as The City Hospital building a good reputation.
These will cost around AED 20,000 (no complications). The costs at a private hospital can easily spiral out of control if there are any complications.
Unless you have private cover, I would not go near the private hospitals. By all means use a private clinic for pre/post-natal care. Expat woman can help you with these.

NMC Specialty Hospital in Al Nahda, Dubai has an exellent team of Specialist Gynaecologists.

The hospital also has a Maternity Education Programme called "MAMA CARE" which is a big hit among all antenatal & postnatal mothers.

You can take an appointment with the Gynaecologists by calling 04-2679999

There is a list of Dubai hospitals where u can give birth to ur child )))
  • Al Maktoom Hospita
  • Al Wasl Hospital, near Wafi Center, Dubai - Tel +971-4-3241111. Popular for giving birth but a bit of a lottery in terms of how comfortable you will feel. You'll probably be in a ward with other mothers rather than a private room (husband can't be with you), doctors and nurses should speak some English but maybe not. Any requests you have in terms of medical procedures will likely be ignored. Medically, probably just as sound as American Hospital or Welcare. Sometimes written as Al Wasel, Alwasl, or Alwasel Hospital.
  • Al Zahra Private Hospital, Sharjah - Tel +971-4-5624382. Has a reasonably good reputation. Popular with people coming from Sharjah and the Northern Emirates rather than Dubai.
  • Al Zahra Private Medical Center, Sheikh Zayed Rd, Dubai - Tel +971-4-3315000
  • American Hospital, Lamcy Plaza area, Dubai - Tel +971-4-3367777, Fax +971-4-3365176. Has quite a good reputation, doctors and nurses all speak good English and try to make you feel comfortable. Food and accommodation good.
  • Corniche Hospital, Abu Dhabi - popular, was cheap (1500 dhs for delivery) but prices raised to 10,000 dhs for normal birth and 14,000 dhs for caesarian in April 2009.
  • DOHMS - Department of Health and Medical Services - Tel 8004991 (?)
  • General Medical Center - Tel +971-4-3495959, Fax +971-4-3495634
  • International Modern Hospital - tel +971-4-3988888, fax +971-4-3988444, PO Box 914, Dubai, email info@imh.ae, web http://www.imh.ae. New (2006) so unknown but appears to be a good private hospital.
  • NMC Hospitals - Dubai tel +971 4-2689800, in Deira on Salahuddin Rd next to Sana, and conveniently close to The Baby Shop. Maternity packages from 2,500-12,000 dhs. Hospitals and clinics in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Mussafah (baby delivery may not be available in all locations). No opinion on quality of medical care.
  • Rashid Hospital - Tel +971-4-3374000.
  • Welcare Hospital, Garhood, Dubai, Tel +971-4-2827788, Fax +971-4-2828226 (Gynaecology and Obstetrics Tel +971-4-2137252. Has a good enough reputation. Comparable to the American Hospital with some saying it's better and some saying it's worse. Doctors and nurses speak good English and will make you feel comfortable.
