Chinese Olympians in the Making Aug 16, 2012
Based on a couple of posts about olympians I had wondered what happens to those Chinese who complete in the Olympics fail. I found this: China's manufacture olympians. Absolutely heartbreaking.

That is no big secret that the chinese have so called factories producing "athletes" and so was the case in East Germany, Soviet Russia and many former communist block countries. But the other topic was the impled brutal treatment of returning failed atheletes. I'm sure its not all rosy but nothing compared to some horror stories of past regimes. Once again I give the example of the Iraqi football team.

desertdudeshj ,

This was my question:

What will happen to those poor Chinese and Russians who didn't get a medal???

Where is the implication of brutal treatment that you assume I made?

Obviously if those children are made to dedicate their young lives (18 hours a day?) to become an olympian athelete their education has to suffer. If they are released from the program for not bringing home the medal, where do they go? what do they do? Do they have a future? Are they tossed aside as if they are garbage or does the government help them to continue on another path?

The article states that they have one purpose: make China proud. It's all about national pride. Public failure would be a disgrace to the country.

You use Iraq as a reference. I don't recall reading about the repercussions athletes suffered from from not bringing home a medal. How about a link on that?

Ah, I though you were refering to something like this, but since you're not aware of things like this I guess that can't be the case then, anyways here it is.
