Burj Khalifa broken already... Feb 08, 2010
From Today's Gulf News (8-2-10)

"Dubai: The Burj Khalifa observation deck has been temporarily closed for "maintenance and upgrade".
A spokesperson for Burj Khalifa, said: "Due to unexpected high traffic, the observation deck experience at the Burj Khalifa, At the Top, has been temporarily closed for maintenance and upgrade."

Yeah right, because there is high traffic the observation deck is closed for "upgrade". It is less than a month old for chrissake...That is the kind of "story" that gives the press a bad name.

How about just saying. There was a problem with X and Y and the observation needs to be closed while repairs/corrections are being made. We apologize for the inconvenience (full stop).

Good old “Dubai” excuses!!!

Nothing goes wrong because of faulty design, or faulty construction, or faulty planning!! Problems occur only because they were “unexpected”!!!!!

According to news.

"Visitors to the Burj Khalifa have told how they were “upset and scared” after a technical fault with the elevator left them stranded on the 124th floor".

Dubai: Tourists visiting the Burj Khalifa have told how dozens of people "began to cry" after being stranded on the building's observation deck for over an hour.

Michael Timms, a 31-year-old telecommunications engineer from the US, said: "I was walking around the observation deck when I heard this really loud noise and what looked like smoke or dust coming out from one of the elevator doors

Fourteen people were also trapped in one of the Burj Khalifa's elevators for over an hour last month.

The group found themselves stuck at a height of 430 metres en route to the observation deck.

I wish in the elevator there was some kind indicator of how far you have travelled up the shaft, all you get is top and bottom floor. I was hoping at least that it would be glass and you could see out as you go up.

How come they allowed the visitors talk to the press?

That is what you think...I suspect that is just "damage control". Who really knows what happened...

Probably threat of detention or passport confiscation against silence, especially for those who got stuck in the elevator for more than an hour.
