Hi,
I am tempted by the “Dubai Experience”, I am French currently living in UK. Having browsed some recruitment agencies, I’ve found that diploma and degrees are often required. As a self made Architect/Software and Web Developer, I do not have any degrees though I’ve a strong experience.
I have enclosed my CV, I would like you to tell me if I could find a position related to my experience and expertise in Dubai and what range of salary I can expect as this aspect is almost never disclosed in offers.
Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi, your CV looks good, i'm also in the IT industry and on Wednesday i'll be in Dubai to look for a job. I was trying to find a job for many months now, since i mention in my cover letters that i will be in Dubai in a few days i had already my first invitations for interviews.

I believe you can find a good salary and some good benefits as well with your experience, but i don't think that you can make it from distance, you have to take the plane and go to Dubai and your chances will be much higher. If you want i would be more than happy to help you by giving you some links where you can upload your cv and find a job, just PM me and let me know.

Regarding salary this is something you can find from someone who's already in this industry and most probably knows much better the name of the game, here in DF you'll find many members to help you.

Happy hunting my friend :)

Welcome to the forum.

I also have no degree and was self made like yourself (I worked my way up within the industry and learnt on the job). I work in the IT side of telecommunications and I have a lot of experience in the industry. I started off in support and then moved into development and now work as Technical lead (a job which has taken me round the globe). My company agreed for me to relocate to the UAE rather then lose me.

Whilst feeling a bit inquisitive I put my CV out onto monsterjobsgulf with the view to landing something new in the UAE. I also applied directly to 3 jobs where I could have easily walked into an interview and shown real examples of meeting the skills required.

I heard nothing back from the 3 jobs, was offered no work in Dubai unfortunately. My CV however made it into the main monster job pool. The next day my phone rang 7 times with offers of work in the UK. One recruitment clerk asked if i would consider and interview if the airfare back to the UK was covered for me . Since then I still get a least 1 to 2 calls a day with offers in the UK.

Now my assumption is that no offers have come to me as a degree is seen as vital in Dubai, especially in a technical position. In the UK this is no longer the case. Most companies will put experience over a degree, and a degree is more of a plus. I can say this first hand after talking to a lot of people in the industry.

Another factor is Dubai is close to India which is producing a huge amount of qualified engineers. They will work for half the money of a European.

I would recommend that if you do look for work in Dubai, you look to hooking up with the main US / European players - such as HP, Microsoft, LogicaCMG etc etc. You will get a far better package.

However after saying all the above you should go for it still, as you never know what may be out here for you. But my feeling is that the days of landing the great package in Dubai are numbered (unless you are in upper management or construction).

Others may prove me wrong though and your mileage may vary.

Sidenote; Ajax rocks, I have been using Ajax in the ruby / rails framework and love it.
