French president's burqa views leave muslims fuming Jun 24, 2009
In his speech, the French leader disapproved of the practice of women wearing a burqa.

He was quoted as saying: "In our country, we cannot accept that women be prisoners behind a screen, cut off from all social life, deprived of all identity."

There are some who are in agreement with Sarkozy's comments, however. L.T., a French expatriate, believes that people should respect the culture of the country they reside in. He said: "In France, displaying one's belief is not necessary.

By wearing the burqa ... women are exhibiting their religion or culture. I personally think they are private details that should not be shared ... Everyone is allowed to have their own respective beliefs, but it is extremely important to fit in with the culture."

GUYS ..WHT DO U HAV TO SAY?

Saw the speech on the news.

Personally I think that Sarkozy had a point. A good one.
Currently a sign of religion, it is imposed to hide women from the immoral behaviour of their men and is therefore explained as a cultural aspect. While unpopular to common belief in the muslim world, its actually seen in the West as a sign of oppression.

I know alot of islamic women think different about this, but they are entitled to their vision and beliefs.

This is mine ;)

Seems like a fair comment to me.

It's like the UAE saying, Europeans are not welcome to have sex on our beaches (another fair comment).

I think that women who wear nice jeans/pants/skirts and long-sleeved shirts in varied colours, with beautiful colourful headscarves fit in much better in non-Islamic countries while also following their religious obligations than women who dress in black draped fabric who cover their whole face or only allow their eyes to be visible. That kind of dress just makes a woman stand out and it is hard to interact with her when you can't see who she is or read her use of non-verbal cues when communicating.

You have to feel sorry for women, they really don't have the best of times when it comes to religion.

Name more than one where they aren't an object of scorn, sin or blame.

Well hey, don't say you don't deserve it.

I don't know what the story is with Islam, but if it wasn't for you pretty little things, I'd be laying in the Garden of Eden right now, instead of being stuck at my desk with work piling up!

As a muslim. I agree with you on that one. A head scarf will do just fine.

I go by the saying "live your religion, but live in the society as well" :)

wearing hijab or any other decent dress is totally personal i think and it is a wrong concept that communicating with a woman wearing hijab or burqa is difficult
do european women wear burqa here in uae or any other muslim country? so why they emphasise we muslims to wear their dress and follow their dress code and culture?

"If they dont like it, they can always leave" .....

Its the thin end of the wedge, only just beginning, I for one truly hope that there are some more regimes with the nuts to start fighting back.

Never thought I would say it but - kudos to the French

Well I beg to differ, yes you could impose a dress code at the work place or certain public places like resturants etc etc. Other than that I don't see why this is a need for any sort of ban or anything.

You can walk around dressed or un dressed for that matter as a total loony and idiot an no one would say anything. Then why if a woman chooses to dress a certain way that it treatning in any way.

Where are all the so called western "freedoms" of rights, speech and blah blah etc etc. That the west prides its self on.

A woman can go almost butt naked ( or completely naked dunno excatly what the french public decency law excatly is ) but if she chooses to cover up according to her beliefs wheter they are right or wrong in the govt eyes that creates a stir.

Sarkozy says "In France, displaying one's belief is not necessary" but its not illegal well atleast not yet. And what about all those nuns then they should be also banned from wearing the habitat.

And if France ever makes such a law then it should apply to all faiths. The Jews should not be allowed to wear the yasmak or the hesidic jews show get rid of thepig tails, beards and black garb. No chirstian should also be allowed to wear a cross or even wedding bands. The Indian women should not be allowed to wear the mangal sutra oreven the traditional bindi or the saree. The sikhs should not be allowed to wear the turban ( I know there has been some uproar about that too )These are all cultural and religious symbols and I can think of many more they all should be banned then. The Pope and Dalia Lama should have to dress in regular jeans and T-shirt when visiting france !

Only if such a blanket law which applies toanyone and everyone, only then it can be viewed as fair. And when does one decide what is a religous symbol make. Maybe spaghetti should also banned as it could be seen as a regligous symbol belonging ti the curch of the flying spaghetti monster.

Ridiculous !

When will we all learn to accept our differences instead of tyring to mould each other into what we think others should be like ie: Like us

And thank you very much, I rest my case.

All you have to do is shake that little box and out they come like cockroaches.

What you are seeing is the backlash to everything that "we" have had to put up with in our own countries, without mentioning the treatment we receive in places like Dubai.

The French opinion is to ban the Burqa not the hijab

Women walking around looking like a pint of guiness has nothing to do with religious tolerance. Our western tolerances are well known to those that exploit them at every opportunity, but the need for disclosure of identity is fundamental to nearly every aspect of life from banking through to state security.

Get of the religious horse, when was the last time you heard of an exploding yasmak or pigtails you muppet

My original comment was in light of the rote ignorant statement thrown at europeans in Dubai, and for the life of me can't understand why it does not apply in reverse - unless you subscribe to the I'm right and your wrong religion, in which case off you go - strap on the vest and send me a message from the otherside to let us know whats there - 72 virgins or a kibutz

Good luck with that

What a load of crap ! thats your sorry excuse.

Wheter it be the Burqa or the Hijab why does it offend you so much or feel your rights are being threatned ? You don't seem have any problem with men wearing thongs in public on gay pride parades. Why does this than ? Where does national security come into this ?

I brought in religon because of Sarkozy's statement "In France, displaying one's belief is not necessary"

I did said out of the work area and some public places. Anybody should be free to wear what one wants in your so called democratic society and should be nobodys bussiness. Tha was the whole point of my 1st post and that you just cannot ban religous symbols and if you do its has to be equal( if you bothered to actually read what i wrote instead of going off in a flurry of mad hatred ! )

And people like you should stop using that suicide terrorist crap as a crutch for your every argument its getting really lame now man. Is that all you can think of ? Is that your answer to everthing ?

I'm sure Mr Nicolas Sarzoky did'nt wake up one morning and decide he did'nt like the burka. It was very well thought of...security could be one reason. He also mentioned oppression, maybe cuz woman's right groups in France noticed that some women were forcibly made to don it?
If there is any country in Europe that has embraced Muslims as their very own it's France.

But your argument DD targeted religious symbols. What has a mangalsutra got to do with this? What has the Dalai Lama got to do with this? That's absolute folly!
DD ur bone of contention is that Mr Sarzoky stated that one need not wear one's beliefs. I have not heard him say it, and if he did I'm sure it was misinterpreted.

This is what he actually said:-
"The problem of the burka is not a religious problem. This is an issue of a woman's freedom and dignity. This is not a religious symbol. It is a sign of subservience; it is a sign of lowering. I want to say solemnly, the burka is not welcome in France," Sarkozy told lawmakers.

C'mon DD you should know not to blindly trust certain media! Or prove me wrong.

Oh and you'd be glad to know that along with headscarves, Jewish skullcaps and large Christian crosses have all been banned in French Schools!
