What Do You Mean By Car Maintenance?

What do you mean by car maintenance? May 21, 2009
I see alot of people have no clue what car maintenance /servicing is all about. Many people have no idea what goes on when they take their cars to service centers to have their vehicles for services.

Boys and girls, it is very important that you know EVERything that goes on with your car...sometimes even qualified service centers forget to check important parts of the car. So it is your responsibility to verbally go through the check list with the agent when serviceing your car.

Frequent service (1-3 months) must check
-Engine oil
-Engine oil filter
-Gear / transmission oil
-Brake oil
-Radiator water!
-brake pads

Rubbers that must be checked every couple of months:
-All pipes under the hood, check for leaking, and replace every year or two if possible. The heat in this country spoils rubber pipes fast. they crack.

-Engine mounting rubbers.
-All barring must be checked. barring is the ring in the center of a disk that rotates on any circular mechanic that spins. Inside the engine.....wheel barring....they are all over the car. Anything that spins...has a barring in the middle...ring shaped....these spin because they have tiny balls inside of them. sometimes, some of these balls break causing the spinning device to screetch....and sometimes even lock-up damaging the car. barrings also on the wheels.....wheele spins too...has barring inside...must be checked. Check by listing for crackling or screetching noises.....you can do this by putting car in D and move slowly...u may hear small crackling sound...anyways..just ask the service people to check it for you....they miss out on such things alot of times.

-brake pads
-brake disks, if you car is more than 5 years old.
-AC coolant.
-Car fuses..... :) also improtant....check all fuses in fuse box.
-Wipers...rubber.

I agree, being frequently serviced is a must. You should always have your engined mounted. Get your pipes cleaned regularly. And keep a fresh supply of rubbers. Coolant always comes in handy in the summer.

Well if you do nothing else, I change the oil and oil filter every 3,000 kilometers as it gets clogged up with sand. Tyres also need constant checkig, especially if you have a 4x4, those big quishy tyres need constant up keep.

car maintenance,

even if the car is in very good condition, I believe for every 5000 kms a service would suffice, and being done by the authorized dealer, they let you know about that the damages and other things to take action!!!!

I had an old POS car (1978 Ford Escort MkII) for four and a half years and never took it for a service. Then I had a 2001 Ford Laser for 2 years and again never took it to a garage for a service.

CA's pro tips for cars.
  • Change the oil and oil filter every now and then.
  • Pull out the air filter and hose it down once in a while. Let it dry and chuck it back in. If it looks old get a new one obviously.
  • Check the plugs every now and then.
  • Check the brake pads every now and then.
  • Check all your fluid levels.
  • Check your tires.

Any monkey can do all those things themselves and save a shipload.

It's a scam nowadays with 4 Billion kilometre warranties but they want your to bring it in for 'Service' every 10 minutes.

EDIT: But you're not allowed to service it yourself are you? That voids the warranty. Better take it in for another 2000dhs service then.

I will not run a car 20,000 Km in Dubai before I get an oil change....even if it's a Volvo!!!

I might do that in Sweden or the UK but not here.

Too damn dusty in Dubai!

How does the dust get into the sealed engine?

If dust cannot get into the engine, why do you think all cars are equipped with oil and air filters?

True, dust may not be able to pass thru the engine seals but it can surely get into the engine (cylinders, walls, pistons) thru the air filter. The air filter, not matter how good it is, cannot stop all dust and dirt from getting in.

Car manufacturer and engine oil companies recommend a more frequent oil change interval when driving in dusty conditions.

I do agree that in most cases paying for service regularly you'll eventually pay more than for any possible breakdown that could happen during the warranty period, especially if you drive Toyota or Honda. I don't speak about British cars here. :)

What's definitely surprised me in UAE is that most drivers don't even change filters and motor oil regularly on their used cars. I was personally looking at how a mechanic at some workshop took out a totally black dirty air-filter from BMW, blew it through and put in back.

Ha! That's going to clean it. Sometimes the level of service in this country of 'skilled workers' scares me.

As for expensive services, what I'm saying is that a few years ago the major car companies found a new business model. They slash $5000 off the price of their cars, but attach ridiculous service agreements to their (very long) warranties that guarantee they get the money back.

A brand new car needs nothing more than an oil/tire/filter/pads change for at least a few years, but these guys make you come in every few months for an expensive service. And if you forget or do it yourself you lose your warranty.

It's a scam, plain and simple.

Come on, Captain, we call it a scam if we talk about Nigerian letters.
As soon as you are talking about the respectable dealerships it's a business model as you said at first It isn't a scam, of cause, not.
