Help with setting up wireless internet at home... Apr 22, 2007
I have been trying to set up the wireless internet at home for the past few days with no success... the IT infrastructure of the building I am staying in is provided by DIC (Dubai Internet City). I bought a Sitecom router over the weekend but failed to connect... not even the IT support from Sitecom could make it work! I then was told that the DIC has a special configuration to force households to purchase more internet sockets (they only provide one socket for their monthly internet subscription). The internet access is from a wall socket and no login or password is required.

If you know which router I should get or how to overcome this problem, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks
PS I bought the Sitecom router here in Dubai

Did you check Sitecom's website to see if your router model and manual exists? Here is the website

http://www.sitecom.com/manuals_result.p ... 54g&WL-535

Does your router have 4 ports at the back? if it does, don't try the wireless right away. Try and see if you can get a connection when you are hard wired.

Also, if you don't like sitecom anymore, and want something basic for the house, go for a Belkin Wireless Router

Linksys and DLink are most common but have the most problems too.

I have a brand new Belkin Wireless that cost me AED 339/= if you want it, let me know.

I had the Sitecom IT support guy at my place for a few hours but couldn't solve the problem... so I gave up that brand and refunded the router. I might give Belkin router a go...

But has anyone come across problems with DIC provided internet? Or is it simply a compatibility issue with different branded routers?

Man a lot of rampant speculation here.

Let's start with the start. The connection offered by DIC/Du/Tecom is a vanilla ethernet connection which is for all intent and purpose no different to any other ethernet connection you'll get.

There's no magic, rigging, tinkering or anything to make it 'different' or not compatible with any wireless router.

I use a sitecom wireless router with my connection and it works fine. Most likely you need to go through your settings, and try a hard/factory reset of the router - just to give it a fresh start.

Appreciate your comments Ian... but neither I or the IT Technician from Sitecom could get it to work on the weekend, we did try to reset option with no luck. I am not an IT specialist but I would of thought the Sitecom technician would know what he was doing, he also mentioned that he came across a similar problem with my next door neighbour.

I will give Belkin router a go but if you or anyone else have any enlightening ideas please kindly advice.

Thanks again

This is an ancient fix but usually when a printer doesn't work or won't take a proper paper feed, giving the printer a *whack* usually gets it working, same with laptops :P

you could try holding the router up high and letting it fall on your bed :P

Just kidding man..

Try this, don't hook your DIC connection to the router. Just power it on, connect your laptop or PC to it via Ethernet, connect to it via the web browser using the default IP address as stated in the manual and see if you can configure wireless.

If it still doesn't work or you have trouble getting to the page completely and the reset does not work, you have a software corruption. YOu may have to change the router for a new sitecom router.

If you are set on getting the Belkin, PM me and you can have it for AED 275. Its brand new and never used and I have the receipt. Price in stores is AED 339

sounds obviously a wrong configuration. if you doubt somethign is wrong with the router, try a firmware update, if its available.

excuse my ignorance... but what I don't quite understand this procedure "connect your laptop or PC to it via Ethernet, connect to it via the web browser using the default IP address as stated in the manual and see if you can configure wireless"... So I disconnect the DIC cable from the Router... then I connect my laptop with the Router using a cable? Or do I connect my laptop dirctly with the DIC cable?

connect your laptop or PC to it via Ethernet,

Obviously to the router, so that you can access the router via the routers' default IP Address. For this to happen, set your laptop or PC on DHCP/Automatically Assigned IP Settings in the Network settings.

Once you connect your pc/laptop to the router through ethernet, and the status is connected, go to the status of LAN Connection & see what the gateway of the connection is.

Put the same ip ( i.e. the gateway IP ) in your browser with http:// prefix.

If you donot get automatic/dhcp IP Address & have no clue on what the routers previous configuration, you might try resetting the router.

However, i guess you are setting up wireless, because you WANT TO BE WIRELESS anywhere in your house. If you donot have any particular requirment, why are you going through the hassle anyways?

connect to it via the web browser using the default IP address as
stated in the manual and see if you can configure wireless

as said above, connect directly via ethernet & use the default gateway in the browser to access the modem/routers control panel

So I disconnect the DIC cable from the Router... then I connect my laptop with the Router using a cable? Or do I connect my laptop dirctly with the DIC cable?

Yes you disconnect your router from the DIC Cable and you connect it directly to the router ( using a ethernet CAT5/6 cable )

Now, if you get a headache from this & an aspirin doesnt work, get your lappy connected to the dic cable, forget wireless :)[/quote]
