Why do we considered marriage as settling down in life?

Dunno. I've never seen it like that. I see marriage as an interesting new
era in my life that I am looking forward too. Somehow I see it as I am
entering another "freedom" room or something. Maybe it's settling down,
but not in a negative way. Marriage is for me a new time to do things I've
always wanted to do.

it is ironic that if you get married you won't actually be settling down- you'll be working your a$$ off to maintain the family.

Maybe because the those with that view intend to make homes which are little examples of paradise, within which people feel comfortable, safe, loved and cherished. They may view marriage and family as the basic building blocks of a well functioning society, and a way to fulfil our basic desires of companionship and of bringing children into this world, caring for them and bequeathing to the world the greatest treasure we can pass on.

Just my views.

Cheers,

Peeps who answered the question. 3:1, 3 Single Male and 1 married (Shafique).

C'mon guys, we hear this all the time. If someone wishes to get married, he would say i want to "settle down" with someone who's ...(describing the partner they want to be with).

I wanna hear views from others as well.

Because your years before marriage are typically your wild years; more adventurous, more spontaneous, maybe more promiscuous.

When you get married and accept the responsibilities that go along with that - namely responsibilities for partner and children - you settle down a bit; you settle into a routine.

It's often used in a derogatory sense when someone is seen as getting boring and unadventurous once they marry - or even enter a long-term committed relationship. That's not to say that people in these relationships always are boring and unadventurous, but there you go.

The phrase also describes that you intend to spend most of your life in that state of marriage - with the life after marriage being 'settled' compared to life before hand being a temporary phase of not being married...

Well I think iapetus11 gave you the right answer on what people mean when
they say "I want/going to settle down". When I say I see it as some kind of
a new era I am going to enter where I will be able to do whatever I want, I
mean things like no one can decide what I am allowed to do or not to do.
Everything I will do will be on my own responsibility and I will finally have the
ability to change my future from something bad to something good that I've
always been dreaming of. I will make changes, and nothing can stop me
when I am finally married. Hm.. you get my point? =)
