What are some great car miantenance tips to learn

Hi guys, I would like to learn some great car maintenance tips. I am a first-time car buyer and I would like to learn the basics of what to do and what not to do. I was reading this article on CarSwitch.com, an online marketplace for used cars for sale that mention that if you hear a screeching sound when you apply the brakes, then be sure to get them checked and, if necessary, replaced. Is that true?
