nursing jobs? May 04, 2008
I wondered how easy,or difficult, it is to get a nursing post in Dubai? I am a senior staff nurse here in the UK and wondered if anyone could give me more information on the best way to get information about perhaps working in UAE. I had expected they would need people who spoke Arabic to work in their hospitals, but given the amount of Ex-pats in Dubai then maybe that is not the case. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Arabic is not always necessary depending on which hospital you work in. You're unlikely to get a good package in a Government hospital (where it would help to speak Arabic), one of the private hospitals (where you won't need Arabic) will probably offer more. What's against you is the large number of Asians who will work in the UAE for less money than Europeans, however for senior positions, hospitals will look for western educated personnel.

I am an expat and have a friend who is a nurse from the UK, the best salary offer she could find was 5000 dirhams, working from 8-2. Honestly your best to stay put. UAE does not value nurses the same way we do in the west.

Thank you so much for your replies.
I didn't realise the salary would be as low as that. So is that the salary for trained nurses and would the salary likely to be higher than that, the more years experience you have?
Would you need to apply to an agency first or is there a possibility of writing to hospitals/clinics direct in Dubai asking to be informed of any vacancies or a list were they can have your name on file incase suitable posts came up?
Has anybody from the UK recently left the UK to work as a nurse in Dubai? If so, how did you go about it and how are things now you are working there?
Any info/advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You can check out this link for more info regaurding licensure www.dohms.gov.ae
To get a job here it would be better if you were first here as the paperwork is lengthy and you need to be sponsored by your employer. So it would go something like this Get job, have sponsor apply for your visa ( which could take a month or more) get nursing license ( another month). Not to mention running around to a gizzilllion different agencies to get stamps etc. You will need all your certificates stamped rite down to your secondary school transcripts.
The salary I quoted you was for a nurse with 10 years experience and a midwife.
You have to understand there are many Asians here who will work for a low salary so it drives down the salary for the rest of us.
Western trained secrataries earn more then healthcare professional here an average salary for them is between 10 000 dhms to 20 000 for a PA.
(Can you type?)
I do know one nurse who is earning a decent salary but she is specializing in radiation therapy and is working more as a consultant then anything.
If you are looking for a change you might want to consider Canada or the US who are desperate for nurses, some will even offer a signing bonus!
Also cost of living here is high and you will need to pay for the entire year upfront. You could try Emirates Airlines as they will give you a housing allowance, but if your coming here to try to earn a higher income...I don't think that is a realistic expectation.
Hope this is helpfull.

Check out this article...which if you google it here in Dubai they have blocked the site!
Bloody money
The "blood money" situation really needs sorting out. There is no way an individual medical practitioner should be held personally responsible for someone's death, unless they are Dr Shipman or Beverly Allitt. This poor nurse has got three months in jail and Dh100,000 blood money to pay for a baby that died. If anyone should be sued, it is the hospital, who should have the appropriate liability insurance covering all their staff.

But let's look at the facts:

"According to the medical report, the delivery was difficult due to medical complications.

"The nurse asked the couple to perform a caesarean but they refused. The nurse used forceps and suction usually used during normal deliveries. According to the court, the nurse used the forceps more than once to force the baby out and the use of the forceps and suction caused the baby to bleed to death."

It's a complicated delivery, but couple refuse the medical advice given to them. The nurse allegedly uses the wrong forceps and suction. Were there no other staff monitoring this difficult birth? Who was the obstetrician in charge?

Well, this can all be explained (not justified, only explained) by the race of the people involved and by who owns the hospital.

The UAE is nothing but the confederacy Version 2.1

It is sad how your race determines every facet of your life in the UAE (from salaries, to justice, to entrance into clubs, to taxis, to even the smile from the watchman in your building.)

SD,

I'm trying to get a second viewpoint on this story, as GN sometimes offers up a very meridional point of view.

Any other papers carry this? I've looked, but to no avail thus far.

What about medical-malpractice insurance? Do hospitals in the UAE have that?
Are they required to have that?

nevermind am wasting my time asking this...

Also, you know she's going to stay in jail longer than 3 months if she can't come up with the money. Its no wonder that there is a nursing shortage here - things like this only contribute to the flight of nurses back home or to the West, where they are better treated and have their rights protected by real law.

I agree with this post for its not about racism but medical malpractice. I would say throw all those (Doctor on call, anaesthesiologist and others) accountable for this crime in the slammer and let the nurse go free. She's after all, a Nurse who did her best. In this case, her best didn't work out thus creating a mess, which she'll have to live with, for the rest of her life.

insipid Chagrin - I agree, the facts are very sketchy. But such as they are they don't add up. A nurse having responsibility for a known difficult labour makes no sense. There might be translation issues, but it doesn't even describe her as a midwife.

some1 pls explain to me, what kind of people say 'no' to any procedure that would ensure safe deliveryof their baby?
and where is the doctor..?
the 1st thing i'd do is ask for a doctor, rather than take THAT kind of advice from a nurse!!
clearly a case of an idiot of a hospital, and even more idiotic staff...

I am trying to sue a local doctor at the moment for mal practise...and there is NO doubt whatsoever that she caused damage...but my case keeps on getting shunted around and around through various places (high ones)....it should finally be going to court soon, but I can bet you, had the doctor been another nationality we all know it would have been over and done with by now.....3+ years already. Once I get her in that court my lawyers are going to have a field day with her.....stay posted

CG - if your doctor is anything like the UAE female doctor who posted on here with the most vile, judgmental stereotypes of "western" mothers, then I wish you luck. I can't believe anyone goes through medical school and comes out so ignorant, foul and prejudiced, but apparently it happens here.

Minkey Chief,

Heck, nah, not in the redneck sorta way - i was using it in the more abstract great circle of the celestial sphere passing through its poles and the zenith of a given place (Webster Diccy) GN stories are usually wonders of errant circumlocution.Up, down, around, but never to the point

And careful there, Vik,

You're waving a red flag- continue in the same "silly Islamic laws" vein and you'll have al-Republican breathing hell, brimstone and oilfire down your neck in no time ;)

On a more serious note, I see this as gross judicial indifference and assinine decisionmaking, not necessarily a flaw in the law itself.

Now one law that is flawed is the blood money compensation if a pedestrian is run over by a car - regardless if the car is cruising along on the SZR while someone chooses to run the 100 m hurdle at that exact moment...

I live in deathly fear that one day someone's going to choose my bonnet to make a splash on.

I've been on the inside, and I have a fair idea how things work. In my third year of med school, I spent eight weeks in the obs/gyne wards in a local hospital in Dubai. One day, three women went into labor at the same time; only two rooms were available. One delivery was particularly difficult so the obstetrician was busy with her.

The second lady started screaming like mad and was immediately attended to by the most experienced staff nurse (nine years; specialized in Obs.)

I can honestly say her work was very good. She was experienced and professional, and completed the delivery without much hassle.

I'm inclined to think that if the nurse suggested that the patient be taken in for a Cesarean, she knew what she was talking about. Despite all that, she tried her best to successfully complete the delivery.

I'd personally fault the parents. If you don't know, don't argue!

(PS: SD, I totally agree with you about Emirati female doctors. Bunch of pompous asses who think they do the ground a favor by walking on it.)

Anon@21:32 - in fairness this was only the one doctor I "encountered" on here. I've only met one other Emirati doctor here, who was female, and she was angelic (it was for business not as a patient, but I am sure her bedside manner is equally lovely).

This is terrible. I feel so sorry for this poor nurse. I wish the UAE would get its bloody act together and start treating people like real humans.

I'm out of Dubai for a bit on business travel and was actually starting to miss the place (crazy huh but so much more interesting than the US..!); Now I read this and change my mind again..

Here's a question - if people die because the municipality doesn't fix a traffic light (refer Jebel Ali Traffic light saga) do they pay bloody money to the victim's family? This country's laws are screwed and its going to sink in its own mire of retardedness when it explodes in a big way on the international scene. They dont know how to plan cities, a modern legislative system, let alone a bloody future.

I am a nurse in Abu Dhabi - originally wanted to work in Dubai but in Dubai they both pay less and do not give married contracts. For a experienced western trained nurse in Abu Dhabi they would be looking at a Senior Charge Nurse position which depending on years of experience will pay up too about 2000 pounds per month plus accommdation allowance. However the big downside is the cost of accommodation as your allowance will only cover about half the cost. The two hospitals recruiting at that level currently are Sheikh Kaliflia Hospital and Mafraq Hospital - try and deal with them directly as its quicker than going though an agency.
