A plot has been uncovered wherein Iran was planning to assassinate the Saudi Ambassador to the US in Washington, DC. The Iranians (one a US citizen) charged with the planning dealt with an undercover agent posing as a member of a Mexican drug cartel and was offered $1.5 million to do the job. This will only serve Saudi Arabia to become even more agitated with Iran, along with the other Arab countries. There was mention that the assassination would take place by placing a bomb in a restaurant which would result in many lives lost, which would probably include other dignitaries. There was also mention on the news that there was a plan to bomb the Saudi embassy, as well as the Israeli embassy in Washington.

Of course Iran is denying it.

The US said that Iran would be held accountable for their actions: attempting to assassinate a diplomat on US soil. One analyst stated that the US has military based in countries that surround Iran. This could prove very interesting.

Wow indeed.

My first thought was 'why'?

It seems I wasn't alone:

Mr. Holder’s assertion and the F.B.I.’s account of official Iranian involvement in the plot, reportedly code-named “Chevrolet,” provoked puzzlement from specialists on Iran, who said it seemed unlikely that the Iranian government would back a brazen murder and bombing plan on American soil.

Investigators, too, were initially skeptical about ties to Iran, officials said. They said, though, that the F.B.I. monitored calls to Iran about the plot and found money had been wired from a Quds Force bank account. In addition, the Iranian-American accused in the scheme, Mansour J. Arbabsiar, correctly identified a known Quds Force officer from a photo array, and his cousin — who he said recruited him for the plot — is another Quds official.

It remained unclear, though, whether the plot was conceived by a rogue element or had approval from top officials of the Revolutionary Guards or the Iranian government.

Bizare indeed. Mexican drug cartels, bombs etc - I think too much partying and Hollywood films are to blame. Thank goodness the numpties were talking to the DEA and not real Mexican drug lords..

Strange reaction from you Shaf, you sound like it would make you uncomfortable if the Iranians were caught red handed.

What is it with these strange fantasies?

We have a used car salesman from Texas making a deal with an undercover cop posing as Mexican Drugs Cartel in a plot to blow up a restaurant where the Saudi Ambassador has breakfast!

C'mon - even loons should see how crazee this is. I just quoted the authorities that also had the same thought I had.

This might be some splinter group that the Iranian government has no knowledge of. The US can't prove how high it goes, if at all, to the top. Is this another WMD scenerio?? The US should have, for diplomatic reasons, approached the Iranian government with their findings rather than stir things up further between Middle Eastern countries, or hand it over the Saudi Arabia or get them involved - after all it is their ambassador who was the alleged target.
