Finally Settled (Fishing for a bit of help) Nov 30, 2006
Hi Guys,

I am finally close to saying me and the better half are close to settling in now.

We have two bed pad over in oud metha and a car for getting around. Nerves are begining to heal after what has to be close to the most difficult month of my life (not an easy task at all).

I could no doubt find out this info my self, but i thought i would check the DF's database of knowledge to see if you have any ideas:

1, Where would be the best place to post letters from (close to lamcy plaza or oud metha / wafi ). I need a 'recorded delivery' if there is such a thing out here. Reason being I need to post a load of expense reciepts to my UK office (so they are not worth a lot, but worth a hell of a lot to me if lost). Would it be better to DHL them?

2, How would i go about finding a cleaner and a washer man (laundry). I don't want a maid, but someone who i can pay to give the apartment the once over (they left the window open so half of the desert and the building site next door is all over the flat). Also have no washing machine, so currently using the bath to wash clothes (reminds me of being a student).

last of all - thanks for all your tips and understanding during a difficult phase.

JJ

Hi JJ, sorry don't know about the mailing issue, but as for the cleaning and washing machine, here is my advice...

The landlord is really the person who should look after the cleaner for the apartment. Try to get him/her to take action first. If they won't, tell them you will find someone but will be sending the bill to them anyway. If that is the case, you might ask some neighbours who they used, and hiring a maid to clean gets the same job done - no need to hire him/her on a regular basis if you don't want.

We bought our washer from Carrefour because it was the best price. They delivered on time too and so far we haven't had any problems with our washer.

Good luck with everything, and welcome!

For your first question, I have to do the same thing, send my expenses/receipts back to Canada, there is a registered letter service available at the post office but I use FedEX, if it is important enough to you I would recommend courier over mail, less probable chance of things getting lost :)

For the expenses sheets, why not scan and e-mail, surely must be much more cost effective.

If I remember, on the ground floor just next to entrance gate of Lamcy plaza, there's a post office/courir stall. Check if they provide EMS/registered mail or something. Otherwise, call DHL Karama branch (check DHL website).

Laundry and dry cleaners are all over the place in Dubai especially residential area. Some also serve home pickup and delivery. Take a look around in the neighborhood.
