Shipping stuff from Germany - anyone experience? Aug 03, 2005
Hi,
Has anyone experience with moving from Germany to Dubai?

Does anyone know
- a good (reliable) moving company to ship furniture and stuff
(best from Munich or Nuernberg)
- anything about possible costs
- how to ship a car (costs?)

What should we know / think of ???
We are only offered 5000 Dhs for moving, I think that is rather low, what do you think?

Any special bank you can recommend
- how best (cheapest) to transfer money to German accounts
- are there savings accounts in Dubai? What are the conditions?

What about having sent stuff from Germany like medicine, food, chocolate, clothes, etc.
- which is the cheapest way to send stuff (post is incredible expensive, is there another possiblility?)
- are there any restrictions
- how long does it take to get the stuff
- how long do letters take to arrive

Any other hints, tips ???
Thanks a lot

Anything over 2.5-3 Euros per Kilo for shipping furniture is expensive. Under 2.5 Euros is good. Under 1.75 Euros per kilo would be kickass if you can get it (taxes/insurance inc. of course).

To ship a car from Canada is the equivalent of 1500-1600 Euros (in a protected container with insurance). So from Europe it would be cheaper due to proximity.

As for banks, alot of the international banks have a presence in Dubai. In terms of preferences I have none, all of the bigger banks are the same generally speaking.

Why would you wanna ship food and medicine and clothes from Germany? You have all that you need in Dubai and even more than what you have in Germany and for much much cheaper... Don't waste your money... Dubai offers more than Germany here...

For mail, it gets here. Use your company's PO Box. Thats what most people do. Reason, there are no street addresses in Dubai like in the Western world :)

Hi, Thanks.
I am sure that there is almost everything in Dubai - but here I know where to get my jeans, what kind and in what size - I hate searching (or even trying on) again. About the prices of clothes - At my last weekend trip to Dubai (3 weeks ago) I had the impression that clothes are rather expensive (except what's on sales). Or is there as much "on sales" during the whole year?

Even more important: Never heard about being addicted to a special kind of cookies ??? !!!

Just fear about getting home sick!!!!

Honestly??? There are no street names??? How do you get your post at all - only by a no. of the appartment/house??? Does it work at all ???
Or can you rent a kind of post box somewhere?

Thanks :?

Clothes in Dubai are cheaper than the west. You just have to know where to shop 8)

The shopping festival in Dubai makes clothes prices a joke... Well its cheaper than Canada in Dubai for the most part. Then again if we look at big name brands likes Yves St. Laurant or Hermes, the prices are equally ludicrous...

I'm sure you'll find your special cookies in Dubai my friend... There is a supermarket (more than one I am sure) that specialises in European stuff... I heard of it and dunno what its called...

There are building numbers and street names (for the most part) but not a real address like:

Street number, Street Name
City (State/Province)
Zip/Postal code
Country

Its more like saying building number XY on Liban Street. :)

And yes you can rent a PO Box.
