sage & onion Pakistanis are the most dangerous drivers in Dubai, police data shows By Ashfaq Ahmed, Chief Reporter Published: January 29, 2009, 22:59 Dubai: Pakistanis remained the most dangerous drivers in Dubai for the second consecutive year, while most number of people killed in traffic accidents were Indians, say Dubai Police statistics. However, Gulf News readers in a poll said Emiratis are the most dangerous drivers. According to statistics released by Dubai Police, Pakistani drivers were involved in the maximum number of fatal accidents as they were held responsible for causing 95 deaths on Dubai roads in 2008 compared to 83 in 2007. This was followed by Indians, who caused 63 fatal accidents last year compared to 81 in 2007. Emirati drivers were third, as they committed 42 fatal accidents last year, compared to 57 in 2007. The number of people killed in road accidents has reduced to 294 last year compared to 332 in 2007. Some 34 per cent of Gulf News readers responding to a poll question say Emiratis are the most dangerous drivers, 24 per cent say 'nationality does not matter', 17 per cent say Pakistani are most dangerous drivers, 10 per cent say 'Egyptian', nine per cent say 'Indians and one per cent says Omanis are the most dangerous drivers while four per cent say 'all of them'. Police statistics revealed that Indian expatriates topped the list of people killed in road accidents for the second consecutive year. Some 107 Indians were killed last year compared to 128 in 2007 followed by 56 Pakistanis killed last year compared to 57 in 2007. Emiratis with 39 deaths in 2007 and 30 in 2008 were in the third position, statistics showed. A senior traffic police official gave a reason behind Pakistanis being the most dangerous drivers. "Most of the drivers for buses, trucks, tankers and other commercial vehicles are Pakistani and they are the one involved in most number of fatal accidents." He added that Indians are involved in most accidents because they are the single-largest nationality in Dubai and consequently hold the most driving licences.

The problem lies with many commercial drivers, (and the Andrew Blairs) as well. It just happens that Pakistanis make the bulk of commercial crivers, not sure why they are so preferred though... smoggie Do Emirais have to take driving tests (Driving test....he said laughingly) ....Serious question??? gafoorgk in my 10 years of experience in uae roads, arabs generally are the most dangerous drivers though newspapers say something else. RobbyG Private or commercial doesn't matter. The type of vehicle or lorry you drive depends on your profession and that must require significant training for safety. This simply lacks in some countries. So nationalities DO matter. In Europe for instance, getting a simple driving license will cost you about 1500 euro at the fastest pace showing true driving skills. 'Normal drivers' do it for approx 1500 - 2500 euro's depending on the amount of driving lessons needed. (one lesson of an hour = 75 euro and rising) If an emirati for instance can get his drivers license for 3 hours driving on UAE roads, that seriously says something about driving quality. How pakistanis get their license is unknown to me. Considering their reputation of killings on Dubai roads in 2008 I say its rubbish. Put them on Europes requirements for lorry and truck drivers and I'll bet 90 percent fails instantly. Quality of lessons and situational awareness for safety is the problem. I think there could be a number of reasons for Pakistani's topping the list.
One could be due to the fact that there is a shortage of truck/lorry drivers and hence they are "given" licenses just to get businesses (like transport) up and running. They are obviously not properly paid which makes them frustrated and we all know what happens when you are frustrated and drive. Plus, as already stated, majority of truck/lorry/bus drivers are pakistani so obviously that's the reason why they top the list. E.g Americans wont top the list because there arent any who drive lorries in Dubai!
Lastly, almost every other day, there is a headline in the news saying that that someone was killed in an accident due to speeding. You tell me how many times it is because it was some Pakistani dude doing it? Mind you, I know many Pakistani people with sports cars!
Im a Pakistani (not a truck driver, just a student) and have driven in Dubai for 3 years without a single accident or even a "close call". I just dont think its fair to generalise by saying "How pakistanis get their license is unknown to me" because all are not like that.
P.S I totally agree that driving training should be massively improved in this country. Its just that saying Pakistanis cant drive etc. makes me feel absurd. (Not just you RobbyG, but many more people) RobbyG Wow, hold it. I never said that pakistani's can't drive!! Where you get that from. What is said was: How pakistani's get their licences is unknown to me. Meaning, I don't know what the requirements are. However, I do understand why you thought that. But seriously, it all needs to be taken in perspective. If there are more Pakistani drivers on the road then they will be responsible for more accidents, it doesn't mean they are the worst drivers though.
They need stats on the accidents in relation to the number of drivers of each country.
But it's all a joke anyway. Until they start patrolling the roads properly it doesn't matter. When you see a guy in a BMW 745 drive past a cop car at 190km/h and the cop does nothing you really have to wonder why they are there at all. sage & onion And the debate goes on, the question is do you believe the statistics that have been published?

In which sense or way would they be higher in your opinion? RobbyG I'm not fully aware of the measures that the police in Dubai uses to gain statistics, but I think their numbers are not always reported as per standard procedure. Meaning, not all incidents are reported and the real number of incidents/accidents will be higher as reported. My 2 cents. ps; Image is everything. Exactly! BlackburnRovers The solution is very simple. Enforce EQUALLY strict driving license tests and enforce traffic laws for everyone. There's no point having strict tests for truck drivers if well-connected 18 year olds can walk in and buy a license. Similarly, no point in deporting truck drivers for overspeeding if some can drive their Range Rovers at 200 kmh past police cars

Divide the amount of Pakistani residents by the amount of Pakistani drivers and you'll find they're probably the safest drivers in Dubai! rudeboy lol maybe the paki drivers are targetting the indians :D lol the indians will start acussing the pakis of terroists act :D honestly the worst drivers are indians. i mean driving 50km in the fast lane where the speed should be 120km and the cheek to brake when a car comes from the behind flashing. then there are the van drivers. with twin cam van those guys have a killing machine in their hands. macjul driving responsible has something to do with maturity, education, mental development and leading a responsible, structured life. If you wake up noon time nothing to do, no worries other than making sure your gas tank is filled and the car keys are within reach, this country will have problems with those drivers. RobbyG

Jot for me... based on the statistics shown.. Emiratis are the worst for being a minority in the driving population... let us say that 15% of licensed residents are locals and 80% of them have committed traffic misconduct isn't it statiscally right to say that most emiratis aren't fit to drive ? quatroporte according to a friend of mine who works in police he confirmed to me.. that the most fetal accidents are indeed caused by Pakistani drivers... my dad is a sr. transport manager for a construction company and he is in business for the past 20 years.. and we had discussed this topic and he confirms that Paki drivers are the worst, causing the company he works for last year so many fines, two deported for major accidents, another two already exceeded the 24 black points.. and the list goes on... Paki's are usually the cheapest and usually got better experience followed by Sardar's and Syrians... but the later two demand more salary than Paki's paki's get out tempered very fast and over react all the time quatroporte and I have posted my opinion in another forum which I mentioned Arab drivers are dangerous in general but cause lesser accidents due to the fact Egyptians, Lebanese, Syrians, Jordanians and Iraninans etc are used to messy driving back in their home countries and usually much more focused... however, they are never used to road discipline, or obeying the rules. Western European drivers are a different topic... due to the fact they came from a highly civilized countries who are very disciplined on the roads and not used to messy driving they end up getting PANIC alot when they meet an Emirati or an Arab driver on the roads... I mean they end up complaining on Radios, Newspapers, Forums, blogs everywhere.. they just panic all the time on how bad everyone else drive in Dubai!!!! :D BlackburnRovers The funny thing is that 95% of Pakistani drivers come from an ethnic group that is probably 20% of Pakistan's populations. That group also dominates the transport industry in Pakistan, and is notorious for being short-tempered, though with generally good driving reflexes..... Similarly, the Sunny doing 60 kph in the fast lane is almost guaranteed to be a South Indian (with a moustache !) You have 2 extremes; Arab driver jumping red signals, and killing people, and South Indians stomping on the brake the moment they see amber and ending up in the junction....... gafoorgk

They are from Peshavar area and speak Pashto (Afgani language). Many of them didn't even leave primary school and really from very poor families. So I doubt that their reflexes are enough for driving safely... As soon as they are mostly commercial driver here, as a rule they didn't have an experience in their own country as most European did. So their driving experience rather short and theoretcal knolege is negligible.
As for me Sharjah taxi drivers (most Peshavari) are among the worst in the UAE. rudeboy

If you look at their countries i.e Afghanistan and Pakistan they have some of the worlds dangerous roads and areas. I have seen them drive trucks on a single dirt track, through the Himalayas. To drive there you need guts, balls, and you need to have skills. Imagine driving from 5am to 11pm through those roads and especially at night where there are no road signs or lights. make a wrong move and you are dead.
Like someone said before they make a majority of the population and that commercial drivers always get paid according to the number of delivery they make not per the hours they spent on the road.
if i had to be a driver, i would be driving over ppl in a monster truck :D

there are loads more just type in Khyber Pass or Gilgit Highway. Red Chief RB, There is no war in the UAE so far and road system is rather modern I must say. You don't need to drive overloaded KAMAZ through the mountain in snowy winter season. So the drivers don't need guts but only experience, knowlege and maturity... sage & onion

There is no explanation of the lane system here. The inside (slow lane) is normally accepted as the lane for trucks and buses, however it is common to find the buses in the second (first overtaking lane) or third (second overtaking lane) and going faster than the cars around them with full loads of labourers or staff.
Secondly, the junction system here is really screwed up. If you want to turn off a main highway, you generally have to fight your way through the line of cars trying to join as the access invariably comes in BEFORE the exit. As drivers here don't want to give way...ever...then it just creates an even bigger snarl up.

Dont occupy the fast lane, but often situations arise where one has to keep changing lanes. I like doing 160 on the AUH-Dubai highway, but i cant do the 2nd lane, because cars often cruise at 110-120 there. On the other hand, you have ppl racing at 180+ in the fast lane, which means that anyone doing between 130-170 has to keep changing lanes....... rudeboy
how do you know they are doing it for kicks? Its very simple. If there is no car in the next lane you move aside and you let the lunatic through. By staying in the same lane, you are just showing your ego and putting yourself and others in a dangerous situation.
i have seen accidents occur when some stupid person didnt let the "lunatic" go through.
there are road cameras and police patrol, so why take the law into your own hands? Jot not really that type though... just a couple of days ago I saw two cars like that... I was on the next lane and the lunatic when to the 3rd so he can just take the fast lane back again... well having a mustang has its perks ;) for me I just stay off the fast lane.... having a baby on the way I'd think twice before I do some crazy stunt... hehehe Jot ...come to think of it... if I was driving a mustang I would drive like that lunatic as well... specially if the one in front of me is a yaris... :D rudeboy
yeh i understand there are loads of crazy ppl out there. but imagine if you had a emergency and you need to drive at 180 kph in the fast, what would you do? flash i guess :D instead of weaving in and out of traffic. zzzane I had my first run in with some Indian dude late last night and it was kinda fun. :D My girlfriend was merrily driving along at five over the limit as he came right up to our back bottom in his Camry and started flashing the corners for some reason. No problem there, I thought as she moved into the second lane. But lo and behold what have we here! The guy pulls alongside and starts looking toward my girl through his untinted windows and acts as if he wants to race. WTF is that? Two seconds later, she gunned it and made it a no contest. if someone is on high speed at the far left lane flashing you to give way and your right lane is empty you SHOULD give way... this is said by a policemen...
if its emergency or if its any other reason... not giving a way, will cause/force the speeding driver to make dangerous overtaking and cause accidents...
thats why there are camera's and police to monitor speeding drivers...
A very good friend of mine who is a policeman patrols everyday on emirates road confirms to me the cause of most accidents are due to slow drivers (mostly indians) getting into the left lane and meeting up with a speeding driver (usually Emirati)...
also, one of the main reasons of traffic jams on major highways, is slow drivers causing everyone to drive behind them in rush hours sage & onion

As mentioned earlier, I'm not the kind of guy who participates in street racing. But trust me mate, when you have some looney on your arse, sometimes that's the only way out.

I don't really agree that women are bad drivers... the problem with most women is that they panic, get scared when driving and freak out when they are in a speeding car...

This is something my little 1year old cousin will agree on... I don't think someone will disagree...
but its also universally known, women are NOT good drivers (I am not saying bad or dangerous) but they are not up to the mark...
and they can be compared to slow malu indians on the roads. they are usually not the defaulters however they cause it due to their slow driving skills. wishmaster

FYI, patrolling police cars does not monitor speeds... unless you are speeding and overtaking other cars or changing lanes in a dangerous way.
I have personally twice flashed a police car driving slow on the left lane on SZR... something rarely occurs... and they gave me the way... regardless what my speed was. pete t

lemme add one more. women lack ability to calculate immediate possibilities around them while driving. many asian drivers behave the same way. that DOES make them bad drivers but not dangerous/worst drivers on road.
speeding, tailgating, changing lanes without indicators, racing are few causes of danger on roads, which are mainly done by arabs. gafoorgk

True. The rich kids think they're the best drivers in the world, right until they wrap the car around a pole or burn to death in public, in seemingly ultra-safe expensive cars. BlackburnRovers I have noticed many Lebs have this vision that a BMW is the safest car ever, and that no one ever dies in a BMW, which is why many of them would rather drive run down 3 series Beemers than a new Lexus or an Avalon RobbyG
At least the Lebs know what a good quality car means. Stylish too and parts that almost never fail, unless you drive like an idiot or won't maintain the car properly.
As for safety...You don't want a tree falling longitudinal on your roof in a 3 series, cause it goes straight trough... Other than that, its a very safe car. I've experienced a 70km/h impact from behind on the highway (in full rain and standing still!!) in Holland in my 3 series coupé and it still was structurally sound for repairs.
BMW 3 series is great. Lebs seemingly know it too.
Offcourse driving with 140km/h and hitting a object, won't increase your survivability. Not even in a Mercedes. Del

I believe Volvo surpasses their safety standards RobbyG They surely do. Volvo is no.1 when it comes to safety. In German safety tests, the 3-series doesn't come out all that high with 3 stars I believe it was. But my experience and most importantly, German engineering standards, are absolutely one of the best. Just look at those cars they make. :jerk: sage & onion

I was about to post the same question. I'm guessing he drives a Z8 or one of those rare Alpina models (B5, B7) or perhaps a Z4M coupe. Z4M roadsters are pretty common in this part of the world. I've seen a couple of 750s on SZR, so it can't be that one either. Hulahula

The S3 is a GTi with some fancy dress put on it. The current S4 looks worse than the previous gen model. The GTi looks a bit weird and is completely run over by the Scirocco.

:) NightFairy I think that many cab drivers are really dangerous but the most dangerous drivers are still the women I think because well as I know from myself I still tend to some times during driving I might wanna arange my hair or put on some more gloss or anything. or just see if I look ok. because of this trust me I barely escaped huuge accidents. true. hack88 the reason paki's have been tagged to be the worst drivers are just because they have covered up every driving job in this country. Taxis, Buses , heavy duty ,tankers , trailers. These people spend more than 16-18 hours a day driving. how can one judge by the number of accident. Absolutely! That is a fantastic idea. However, one major flaw. Salary. Fortunately for the UAE, it is able to employ people for shockingly low salaries. Taxi drivers get about 700 AED per month salary without tips AND they have to buy their own uniforms. uaebadoo

Where was the inf. comming from? A year ago a salary of taxi driver in Sharjah was 1500 Dhs, although it was 3500 Dhs in Dubai and the Sharjah drivers were not happy. salary of taxi drivers certainly is not 3500. i was told by one of the pakistani taxi driver that his salary is 1200+commission. since he has been working here for more than 15 years and knew many shortcuts, he was able to earn 4500 to 5000 a month. Wednesday Jones Paid by how long the journey is rather than the length of the journey in kms. That is why taxi drivers drive like lunatics esp in the outside lane of SZR, to get max fares and max tips. I have reviewed taxi drivers employment contracts, that's how I know. I made a little mistake using word "salary" but your digit from the contract diesn't have any sence because taxi driver have %% from earning. Following words of another DF member actually confirmed my words:

The three cars skidded and collided with four other vehicles on the same road. The Traffic Court acquitted an 18-year-old Emirati, A.K., of reckless driving and racing for uncorroborated evidence. Meanwhile a 22-year-old Emirati, M.A., was fined Dh1,000 and had his licence revoked for one year after he was incriminated for racing dangerously. Bu Farousha told the newspaper that the Traffic Public Prosecution will review the primary verdict and decide whether to appeal it within 15 days. A.K. and A.A. were charged with racing, reckless driving, causing the death of four victims and injuring two others in the collision. A.A. and M.A. were charged with speeding and racing.
