That story has been around Dubai for years. It may not be so true now - I thought another UK test was done (TG again?) and you needed 400 kph + or something insane.

So not long now until the new toll! 1st of July.
What will you do?
Jeevan
the other roads will be a nightmare to drive on, the traffic situation is gonna worsen.
People are already trying alternate routes and as a result the Maktoum bridge is blocked in evenings. for the three days in last week it took me 1.5 hrs to reach rigga road from burjuman, when it normally used to take 15 mins.
its gonna suCK big time
^ian^
It is certainly going to mess up some of the roads in Dubai, I can't see it being that great a move... but you know... maybe they know something we don't.
Jeevan
yea like people being fed up and leaving Dubai for good

I don't think they know. There is even some dispute between RTA and the Police regarding Salik?
It's a bad idea with the present infrastructure - 8 dirhams a day wont be a deterant for most people = 160 dirhams per month.
I won't be taking any alternate routes. The time to take the detour won't be worth it.
Once the metro is in operation, and all the other roads and bridges are completed then perhaps it would help.
My prediction: they will stop Salik as of January 1, 2008 (if they start it that is).

8 dirhams? Try 16 Dirhams or more for a lot of people - or more likely the majority of people.

You are right I forgot the Deira/sharjah to Jebel Ali journey that a lot of people make (and for which the alternative route will add another hour).
They need fast ferry boats to Jebel Ali port!

I'm afraid of using the word "fine" in the same sentence as "salik" in order not to jinx it as I plan on testing it by going 180 kmh under the toll gates to see how they work!

To be honest, they should have waited until the floating bridge was completed, to at least help a bit, plus the new Garhoud bridge.

So the toll will run 24hr right... what kind of traffic on Garhoud at 3am?
I had to buy the 'sucka kit' for 100Dhs as well. 700,000 registered vehicles in Dubai x 100 = 7mil and it did not start yet!

7 Days actually ran a story on the petitions today.

By 2009 Salik is likely to be a feature of most main highways in Dubai.
I would have assumed that most people would realise that the first 2 stations were a 'trial' before it was rolled out through the rest of Dubai.
By the way, in the Uk, RTA stands for Road Traffic Accident.
An apt name?
arniegang
Can anyone provide any information as too how the system actually works and more to the point how will it be enforced.
1/ Yes i know cars have to have tags and it will be picked up by driving under the Salik gantry at Barsha and Garoud.
I cant see any camera's soooo ..........
a/ is it picked up by electronic tagging only ? or
b/ like in London, camera's will picture every single car number plate and compare it on a database to a purchased tag registered to that particular car?
If it is based on (a) only, how are the RTA or Police going to enforce the cars that dont have tags?
If it is based on (b) will the fines be logged onto our registrations and pay up every year at registration time.
I suspecty its (a) because they wont be able to enforce fines on any cars owned by Saudi's etc etc etc. If i am correct then the chances of getting stopped at a police checkpoint on the SZR at 5.30pm are about as likely as me selling oil to the GCC Nations. Can anyone imagine the traffic jam lol it will run back in both directions to AB and Sharjah. Basides which how many police cars do we ever see on the SZR anyway lol.

There are cameras there although at first you don't notice them. Although I haven't inspected the Tags that closely, I believe it's a combination of visual recognition and RFID. Basically the tag transmits the number plate, and the Cameras also use OCR to read number plates... it's then a not so simple matching system.

A combination of A & B actually.

I had a really good nosey and i cant see any forward facing camera's though.
If there definately are camera's, some naughty people in the UK avoid detection by using black insulation tape on various numbers and letters on their number plates to alter the car registration number (temporarily of course 8) )
ie: a zero can be turned into an 8, a 5 into an 8, a 7 can become a 2 and an F can be turned into a P etc etc etc.
Obviously those of us who are law abiding citizens wouln't dream of such a scam :?
