I've also heard the explaination that its possibly a corruption of the English "The Bay" refering to earlier times when English and Dutch vessels used to call in along the coast for harbour and trading.

I lead a sad and alienated life which would include beer and porn if I wasn't a conservative so here... I accentuate my miserly existence by polluting forums into wasted lands with undigested ideas that tread and crawl towards the mind of other similar melted rationales to ensure the longevity of banal existence

I was also interested in understanding the meaning of the word "Dubai" since its not arabic even. all the other emirates has arabic meanings but not Dubai.
The only thing which could make sense to me tat it means: "Du Bahi" which is basically an Indian word means: the two "Bahi" brothers ...(Du means 2 and Bahi is the name of the Family). This name came after 2 Indian brothers started a small trade on the cost of dubai when this place was nothing at all. The "Bahi" brothers then became the reference for the place and slowly the word has been modified to Dubai
