what is it? Luck?


constantine well it all pans out at the end...or evens out somehow...life aint fair and it gives you your fair share of ups and downs...either ways it too short to see where others are and lament...i was chasing the dream for a good 7 years...moving from one company to the other...and yes did get a nice pay jump everytime...but hey there is loyalty and making friends and having good experiences...the key is to live in the now...and not worry about the future....whats the point...do you want to be full of regrets but have saved a lot for a comfy life?...or do you want to have great memories and enough strength to still be active...having said that...dang i could always use the extra cash :lol: ....not that i am complaning(we just got a fat bonus- for rising rent increases)...my bachelor of commerce is yet to be utilised(other than the odd fast math calculations)...summary is...dont look at the benchmark of others...as you will never live your life fully otherwise...
AnnaSvensson I just can't understand why for some people everything goes so easy and others have to put a lot of effort before reaching a goal? Just got news about one my friend. A guy in his early 20ties. No education, the laziest person in the world,all this time I know him I saw him sober only a couple of times. And now he has a good job in one well-known company, travels all over the world and get a salary more than 4000 euro. More than sure he did not do anything to get this job, it just simply came to his hands itself. Do not think that I envy him. He is not only one example that I saw in my life. Simply the qustion is: how to be lucky? Or it is something with what you are already born......... :? jag

Well, I did not want to stress on money in my message.
OK. Another example. There was a guy in our college, whom everyone called "Lucky one". Whatever he wanted it just simply came to him. I will give you only one sample. There were almost 100 students from the college who went to the US Embassy to get a working visa that is opened for 3 months. Everyone got 3-months-visa except him. "By accident", as consul said, they put him a visa for 2 years.

We improve our own luck by doing the best we can and gain the reward for it. MaaaD yes mema said it .. if you keep looking around you will always think that. Be content, we have an arabic saying that says being content is an infinite treasure. Just keep working hard for your goals, i dont think life is luck. Its 99% hard work and 1% luck .. noni some people always seem to get everything they want...always getting away with bad things and never appreciating anything. they think they are lucky but eventually it does come back to haunt them...karma once again... like everyone has been saying...hard work pays off and that is what will be valued in the end and will also be worth something to you. NoWoRrIeS Luck is not about having a good job or lots of money, look around you... travel to Bangladesh or Somalia and u will find that you r sooo blessed that you r in good health and have fully developed limps, 3 meals a day.. I have tried my best at many things and have been unsuccesful, but wonder how others put 10% of effort into something, and it lands on their lap. So the idea of 99% hard work and 1% luck - I totally disagree with. Of course, coming from a western country maybe I should count myself lucky against all the starving people in the world. I'm sure all those people work a hell of a lot harder than many of us. But then this goes against the notion of work hard, and you will be rewarded. Now, if you're content with everything your ambitions are limited, and thus is happy with what you have. The idea that if you're a nice person and do good things etc, and you will find love blah, blah, blah is such a cliche. Now how many of you know people who are nasty and horrible, yet have a partner(s) that are blindly in love and silly to stay with them? Yet, I bet you also know of a really nice, kind, smart person, yet he/she will only ever be classified as a "friend"? MaaaD sometimes people work harder but not smarter and when things dont go well they blame luck. I disagree with that mentality and anyone who blames bad luck for failure is just being defeatist and need something to blame. onetickin
Based on your remarks above, would you say unfortunate people in developing countries are any less hard working, or smart as you or myself?
I'm sure they are smarter and more hard working, but yet they have more to worry about than you or me.
The idea that smarter/hard work = success is an insult to people who live in restricted/limited resources.

Everything in the world is relative. Luck is when under similar circumstances, one prevails above another whilst less effort is applied. Princess Banana Hammock I make my own luck. If I want something, I reach for it. If you sit on your butt all day it's not likely opportunities are gonna come knocking at your door. Your friend must have done something for this company to want hom to work for them? I just feel glad to be here. The Big Picture This is the most interesting subject and discussion I have seen on DF.... Luck is not a thing of chance like many believe; it is purely a state of mind... Years ago I moved into a house in London with 2 lads, 1 I had previously lived with. He told the other guy, "Stuart's luck will actually begin to annoy you". Strange, huh? No...Those in life, who work hard, have strong morals and principles and try their hardiest to live life with honour and pride, will generally be provided with a good path... Luck is solely how you think and perceive what's in front of you - if you believe the glass is half full, and then you will always have a drink... If you're pessimistic, then you will always be staring at someone else with a drink when you're thirsty! Princess Banana Hammock is a special person with a great heart and a fab mind (plus she knows how to rock!!!), and when she said “If I want something, I reach for it.” That is spot on…. You seem to equate success with financial gain, and thats a flawed criteria. Success doesnt have to be = to being rich. MaaaD
this is where you need to stop being so mad at the other people's success but rather focus on getting your own :) onetickin No, I do not equate success to financial gain. At what point have I stated this? Obviously, there is a lot more to life than just money. The word success could mean anything. It could mean access to health facilities, food, shelter, love etc. The people in develoing countries are just as smart and work harder, yet their luck has placed them into unfortunate cicumstances whereby they lack the forementioned. So I find it difficult to equate hard/smart work = success (not necessarily financial gain). I do not believe I have mentioned any financial gain. In fact I refer to examples of starvation, ambition, and love, but not finanical gain. ^ian^ Personally I don't believe in luck. I believe in everything happening for a reason though. Perhaps the fortune of your friend is to serve as inspiration to yourself. Personally, I'm not sober for more than 2 days a month... I wasn't aware it was a problem. noni
We are lucky that we don't have to be worrying about where our next meal comes from. But, there have been many people who have risen up from adverstiy. A family friend of ours...grew up dirt poor in India, no water, no food, nothing. He is now an incredibly wealthy doctor (cancer specialist) making TONS of money here in the states. He had the drive to get out of his situation and he milked it! Unforuntately governments, families, etc in some countries don't allwats allow these things to happen. In an idealistic world I would like to think that anyone from the lowest of the low can reach the highest of the high and all that would be through nothing but hard work. Some people may get discouraged along the way, thinking they can't make it. But some are stopped by external circumstances out of their control...and some do make it. Essentially, I am just wondering WHY when I want to reach a goal I have to put all my effort into it; whereas others just snapping their fingers and get what they want.
I agree with those who said that sometimes it looks that people so easily get what they want(this is how my schoolmates are thinking about me) but in reality they DO work hard.
It should be something!!!!!!
Maybe an answer is our subconsciousness? :?:
