What 4x4?

FTD Ok, know there are few petrol heads and off roaders here so bit of advice. What would you recommend at the smaller end of the SUV/4x4 market? I am thinking about an X Trail, but will test drive a Honda CR-V and Rav 4. Though I doubt I will get a Rav 4 but will try it. Any other suggestions about what I should look at, Mitsubishi? I won't be going proper offroad with it but it will be using it for picnics to Fujairah/RAK etc. I will also be making frequent road trips to Abu Dhabi in it so would like something with a bit of road comfort too.
uaekid it's a NO for the rav-4 ,it easily gets damaged from underneath and all plastic protection as I recall.
if you are looking for this class I think the new nissan exterra ,its built for such a thing and got a powerful HP . smokedawg I agree with uaekid on the Rav4. Any Jeep will last you forever tho.. Leda Go for a CR-V. Best engines, reliable, just 2.4, which is more than enough here, relatively inexpensive service, good offers from honda, very confident and professional staff in showrooms, as opposed to toyota's and mitsubishi's, which means ull get less unuseful BS to pay for. It matters if Uve got a family here to carry around, doesn't it? as well as if u concider getting a new car or a used one. Budget? Give ur people more details)). Chocoholic Have a look at a Mitsubishi Pajero short wheel base. They last foever and are really well built. Leda
I wouldn't agree on this one. That car needs rough moments, needs mud and sand. No need to pay extras for differentials and extra set of gear and cylinders, if not going to leave that highway. IMHO  BlackburnRovers I have been looking around the market, and to make your life easy, I will recommend the following: 1) First, decide whether you want an offroad vehicle or not, this is the most crucial part of the purchasing process. There is a substantial difference between offroad ready vehicles like Xterra, Fortuner, Pajero, and softroaders like CRV, Rav4, Xtrail If its the latter, then CRV has a very good reputation, Nissan is the best in terms of price, you can get a leather interior, full options Xtrail for 90k... xty Get a V6 engine for a different satisfying experience! If you concerned about the budget, then Tucson V6 2.7L is the most affordable one (less than 70K) and I was satisfied. maximusprime Xterra is the best car for the money. Very powerful, very well built, I would go for that if you can afford it BlackburnRovers I was thinking of the Xterra as well, as its quite fast and really good offroad. However its cons are: 1) Very basic cabin, when compared to CRV or even Fortuner 2) On road ride quality isnt that good. If you think you wont be going proper offroading more than once a year, than it may be better to get a softroader and have better ride/driving quality

Sharp Toyota V8!... Boy that's Just made for these kind a stuff!!....... uaekid
you can't hace it all my friend ... but if you are in hard core off road driving then don't go for the computerized ones. they'll break in the long run.
I remembered my 2006 Bmw 745 I heard a sound when shifting gears so I took it to the dealer and told me it's your clutch that needs a replacement so I said yaa go a head and do that ( thinking it wont coast me more than 3000) so the estimation was 40,000  ... (fuc* me ) I sold it the same week LOL desertdudeshj Save your money with the ghay soft roaders, You really dont need a offroader for anything non desert related, Unless your into some serious rock crawling going up sides of mountains at crazy angle. Which I HIGHLY doubt you will do. Get your self the sedan/saloon of your choice 99% places have sedan friendly dirt tracks going all over the places for you little beach picnics in RAK and the east coast. FTD
Ah, you like the macho, hard stuff, huh? Remember and play safe though.

I actually need the space. I would get an estate car (station wagon) but they don't seem to be that popular here thus more of a liability.

Maybe so but if they are not in the direction I actually want to travel in then they are no used to me though, are they?
Thanks to everyone else for the advice. desertdudeshj In that case get a pajero around 130k spanking new and fully loaded with all the bells and whistles, and some resale value. Lower specs obviously cheaper DPS I have used the 2008 CRV and now drive the Hyundai Santa Fe. The CRV is a super vehicle if you are sure you will not be going off road. One of the best vehicles I have driven Hulahula
Huh that's funny because BMW doesn't offer a manual transmission in that model 7-series...so whoever told you the clutch was bad was OBVIOUSLY a trained BMW technician
40K is about right for a new automatic transmission, and if you were doing neutral-drive drops to "launch" the car then you deserved that final price  desertdudeshj Auto boxes also have "clutch packs" Hulahula Yep but in order to diagnose a bad clutch packing assembly in the primary and secondary planetaries, the transmission has to be disassembled anyways. Any smart dealership will just replace the transmission before attempting a rebuild, especially if it's under warranty. Depends on how the car was driven, what the damage could be... Neutral-drop launches will put the hardest strain on the pump and valve body assemblies, clutch packs usually only get burnt out from overheating or the torque converter not locking up when in overdrive. Oh well, not like Uaekid really cares what happened to that car ;D
desertdudeshj And just yesterday somebody was bragging how tough ZF trannys are and meant to be non servicable item and good for the life of the vehicle if not more. And ZF transmissions do have impecable history used in every thing from Range Rovers, BMW's, Jaguars and a few luxury american limosines. My 11 year landy also has a ZF with around 200k on it and still is silky smooth. But ofcourse they were not meant to handle the abuse of the likes of UAEKkid :D You really have to go for it to bum one of thoses trannies outs. Hulahula Oh i'm sure he's "bummed" a few "trannies" with his "acceleration" techniques :) Gimme a Ford C4 automatic any day, bolt in a nice manual valve body with trans-brake and upgraded 2nd and 3rd gear bands and throw any 1000+ hp engine you want in there  Narine Dear all members! I want to buy Mitsubishi pajero io, cupe(3 door), 1999-2000 years for cheap price about 4000 $. If u have any information about where i can buy, please tell me. Very thx for your attention. busa GMC Siera pick up,big wheels and a supercharged engine,on road, off road you name it and as cheap as chips. Oh i did i mention that i am selling mine :D rudeboy i have had my patrol for the last 6 to 7 years it is 2003 model. Honestly speaking it is the best 4 wheeler I have driven. I have driven a pajero, a prado and a cruiser and they are not in the SAME league as the Nissan patrol for various reasons. As long as you service it and regularly maintane it, it will never give you a problem. However got to warn you that Nissans do have a problem with wobbling stearing wheels. But thats only because if you have drivers like me going over footpaths to take short cuts :D. Oh yeh whichever 4 wheel you go for dont go for a BLACK one. canuckbid I always heard a saab holds their value pretty well.

Some guy thrashing his old saab. smoggie surprised there are no votes for the good old Wrangler. Rugged and good VFM desertdudeshj
The Sheep is unrealiable, uncomfortable and with the range of a granny with a walker before it runs out of gas. Not to mention the lastest generation being ugly as Fark. And they have even more reliablity issues than the older ones. Leda Aren't they talking 4x4s? :D desertdudeshj First of all a Saab DOESNT holds its value well here. Infact anything other than the usual Japanese crap doesn't over here. And YES we are talking 4X4's not soccer mom AWD station wagons ! But I do this guy to does take is forrester/outlander ? out into the dunes ! desertdudeshj Oh and BTW cannuck this is the way we like to drive in the desert so have an idea that we need a proper 4x4 Infact I'll post it as a new thread Red Chief
Dude, don't be so tough. I see that some people seriously discuss CRV in this topic as well.
To be frank visually and in terms of spec. and price I like Ford Edge. It's very comparable with CRV in price but IMHO is much better SUV.
Of cause I am not going to dune bash but SUV at price of sedan is rather good option in the UAE. At least people will "respect" you on the speed lane.
The only thing that stop me from purchasing is an opinion of my American friends that the only GM can compare (rather distantly) with Japs in quality. The rest Americans are utter junks. desertdudeshj Well as of recent the Jap quality is also nothing to write about either. Get the new GMC Acadia. If you prefer a GM. But its strictly a mall crawler and should not see any off road action at all. Ford Edge is quite stupid with the fact it does not even have a hook or even a screwable eyelet to pull the car. Saw one stuck in Dragon mart sand paking could not pull it out because no where to tow it out from ! Red Chief
It's a big disadvantage of cause. :) Living all my life in severe weather conditions (believe me snow, ice or mud are as good friends of any driver as sand) I understood a wisdom that better 4 wheeler you have means much longer walking distance for a caterpillar.
So I'm not a fisherman. 8) canuckbid Hmm well the OP never stated what they were going to use if for. I posted a commuter that is a 4x4. Since you never get ice there I can see no need for it on a public highway. I don't care what you buy, as long as you can get parts for them. They all break down. If you are going to play in the desert seriously, then get something made for it. Like a real dune buggy. Not that other cr*p. Those guys are driving like a bunch of girls in that video. Are the foreigners going to have to show you how to do that also? Just like getting that oil out of the ground. All foreign technology. What do they actually build in Dubai besides hotels? (that's all imported technology also)
desertdudeshj Hate to say it canucky, but your starting to sound like a troll. Bad day at work maybe ? canuckbid I showed a 4x4 for the OP. You came back with your smart*ss remarks. I gave a little taste of it back. Not fun is it? desertdudeshj HuH ? I thought I was being very accomadating, Saab does not hold its value well ( maybe it does in canada )and many don't even know it exsits over here. And the Video was FYI so you get an idea of what kind offroading is I was talking. Not the generally boring muddy gatch tracks of N.America or if you go extreme up there. Even more boring Mudding and rock crawling. Although we do have our mud pits and mountain ranges not many care for it. Anyone who's done all three types will tell you which is the most exhilirating and a bigger adrealin rush. Snow n Ice is the only thing we don't have here but I know people who now live in Alaska and Canada still say nothing beats the sand Anyways no worries Peace out and chillbro. Red Chief I think you need this experience, Dude, when you cannot start any of your jeeps due to raging blizzard and don't have any single man 500 km. around. Then you will understand that diesel isn't the best fuel in the world. P.S. I don't mean in below statement that snow and ice is worse than sand - real "fisherman" can easy find an adventure on own arse anywhere in the world. 8) desertdudeshj RC, where the hell did diesel come into the discussion ? arniegang Diesel is a total no-no in any form of off-roading. gcarlin37 1. Small SUV 2. Real off roader 3. with low range gearing and differential lock. There is only one vehicle for which all the above can be true and that is Zusuki Grand Vitara. Believe me, I have seen a grand vitara (slightly modified) doing wonders in the desert which perhaps a Patrol or Land cruiser can not think of because of their weight.(This is only my observation. I am not an off road expert as many of you) Red Chief
Rather unusual point of view I must say. Many jeepers chose diesel for its high torque at low engine speed and a half of fuel consumption against petrol engine. Red Chief Double post. desertdudeshj
I have to agree with this. It the most compact proper 4x4 available only to be beated by the Suzuki Samurai now Jimny in compactness. desertdudeshj
Well in this country and desert driving diesel is really not the optimal choice of fuel and you need speed and quick accelration to cover the dunes. Although in capable hands a diesel would not fair bad at all.
Still old 60's and new diesel bedfords, nissan diesel and tatra trucks scour the deserts of the empty quarter
I've been dying to try out the New V8 turbo diesel Land Cruiser with 1000nm of torque ! Unfortunately the retards at Al Futtaim don't bring it in and is also not availiable in Oman n Buraimi Red Chief
I am not goint to argue but in Tunisia I saw 2 million km. on ODO of many LC, that had done long safary raids deep inside Sahara. You probably understand w/o a hint which kind of engine they have. desertdudeshj 1st of all you cannot get a million on any odo of any cars as they only go up to 999,999 then it will reset also not very uncommon in Oz for old land cruisers to trip over and reset an there are many example of high milage cars here I've see close to 900,000 myself. You can cross any terrain in a diesel but to actually play on top peaks of high dunes. Do long insane climbs up a slip face you need a petrol or a V10 turbo charged diesel. I've driven a 4 cyl diesel in the desert in a LWB Land Rover it can move around but have to be content with staying low down on the smaller dunes. And once it gets bogged down its really an effort to get yourself out. I was actually going to buy a diesel Land Rover but the high price of diesel here put me off. the extra milage I would get would be evened out by the price of diesel fuel. Plus not enough oomph to really play to your hearts content out in the dunes Red Chief I know nothing about sand but if you make the same experiment on snow SUV will lie on belly but all wheels will rotate very quickly in air. As for ODO I can make a mistake - it was 15 years ago, but mileage impressed me a lot. I have never seen such digits before and after. As for cost of diesel in the UAE you are right -rather unusual situation compare to the rest of the world. In Russia diesel costs 10% less than 95th that together with rather high cost of fuel against UAE make them rather good choice for ling raids. desertdudeshj Totally offtopic question RC and not judging you or intented as an insult of anykind Are you usuing somekind of online translator like google translator etc etc gcarlin37
Diesel is more expensive to refine than petrol. So it has to be more expensive to the consumer. Diesel is cheaper in many countries because it is on government subsidy. This extra cost of subsidy compensated by hiking price of petrol.
The reason for all these is diesel is the fuel for mass and goods transportation, agriculture and power generation. Red Chief Exactly, Dude. As far as I understand without google translator the guy in the OP asked advice about a SUV for regular routine and weekly picnic in RAK. Such a car is intertesting for me for the same purpose. In the reply you started your rants about soccer mom. Is it absolutely necessary for you to jump in any thread with sign 4x4 and make long flame? desertdudeshj No was just curious, as sometimes its quite hard to understand you. Same kind of language I get when I sometimes use a translotor. Searcaigh First post here, jsut found this forum by accident trying to find information on another subject. desertdudeshj, Al Futaim will import a diesel LC if you go to the right people to ask for it. A Swedish friend of mine who works for the UN had one brought in for him (not for the UN) and eventually drove it back to Sweden during the summer when he was transfered to Rome. Like most 4x4s of course it had to be modified after it came out of the box for real off roading. (unable to post a link or photo because I have not posted more than 15 times in this forum) I have some friends driving diesel Defenders here that can outdrive any V8 LC ... a matter of knowing how to drive a diesel in sand I was never an oil burner fan until I drove a diesel LR3 in S. Africa last year, but the new LR4 5L V8 has more appeal desertdudeshj I'm not talking about the 4.5 6 cyl diesel I'm talking about the V8 diesel, The regular 6cyl diesel is out and about and not a problem to aqquire. As for Diesel Vs Petrol in the Sand Dunes The petrol will out class the diesel everytime. I've driven SWB TD5's but not in the same class as a gasoline engine. As for outdriving anything that pretty much depends who is driving what. An offroad driven by a newbie will struggle while a experienced hand with a stock softroader will leave it inits trails. Anyways Sears you seem like your an 4x4'sy offroader kind of guy if you are why not join our offroad clubs for weekends forrays into the unkown and you can find in both clubs with the same nick ID Searcaigh desertdudeshj, I am talking about a V8 Diesel Hopefully this photo can upload now ... maybe not perhaps in the next post Searcaigh Searcaigh Duplicate entry aghshahin Only maxima desertdudeshj Yes your two words are SOOOO relavant to this thread which BTW died almost a month back until you brought it back with your pearls of wisdom.
