racheldbeavan Starting August 2009 - Weekly Guided Meditations - Springs/Dubai Meditation is a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the reflexive, ‘thinking’ mind into a deeper state of consciousness or awareness. Meditation often involves turning attention to a single point of quietness. It is recognized as a component of many religions, and has been practiced since antiquity. It is also practiced outside religious traditions. Different meditative disciplines encompass a wide range of spiritual and/or psychophysical practices which may emphasize different goals—from achievement of a higher state of consciousness, to greater focus, creativity or self-awareness, or simply a more relaxed and peaceful frame of mind. The word meditation originally comes from the Indo-European root med-, meaning ‘to measure.’ From the root med- are also derived the English words mete, medicine, modest, and moderate. It entered English as meditation through the Latin meditatio, which originally indicated every type of physical or intellectual exercise, then later evolved into the more specific meaning ‘contemplation.’ Meditation can be considered a technique, or practice. It can involve concentrating on an object, such as a flower, a candle, a sound or word, or the breath. Over time, the number of random thoughts occurring diminishes as you move further into a deeper state of consciousness. Meditation can also be objectless, for example consisting of just sitting. Relaxation, increased awareness, mental focus and clarity, and a sense of peace are the most common by-experiences of meditation. While much has been written about the benefits of meditation, the best attitude is not to have any expectations when practicing & become detached from all that comes forward, doing deeper into a sense of awareness of ‘being.’ Failure to experience silence, peace of mind, mental clarity, bliss, or other promoted benefit of meditation is not in itself a sign of incorrect practice or that one can't concentrate properly or concentrate enough to be good at meditation.
