can a student on university sponsorship (dubai) get a driving license from abu dhabi as the student and parents stay/work in abu dhabi?
"However, if you are a resident of an emirate but have a visa issued in another, then you need to obtain a transferal form allowing you to obtain your driver's license from the former"
this is what i got from
where can i get this transferal form?

i don't see the problem? its a UAE drivers license, it doesn't matter which emirate you use it in

i know you can drive in abu dhabi with a dubai or sharjah DL too.
i am asking about if one can OBTAIN a DL from Abu dhabi if the residence visa is from Dubai.

i think what Soul is saying (correct me if i am wrong)
you can get your driving licence in Dubai, it is then valid for all emirates.

Seems the others can't figure out what you're asking.
It used to be posssible to do what you want to do back in 2003 (which I did). But not any more, because I have friends who got turned away in the same situation as you. The rules have changed, but seems you have found a way with this form. Good luck finding this form!

i understand the question, just don't see what difference it makes in the "big scheme of things". it's hardly as if the driving test is really easier in one or ther other ...

It is a matter of convenience. His issue might be he wants to take lessons in AD instead of having to come to Dubai every time, even on his college holidays. As I said, my friends have faced this BIG issue with Dubai/Sharjah and not having cheap transportation during their learning period.
dbxsoul
point taken, but is it not possilbe to take lessons in one place and take the test in another??

He wouldn't be able to get a learner's permit either. I have friends with Sharjah visas turned away from EDI.

I believe that you cannot obtain a DL in Abu Dhabi if your residence visa is from Dubai.

I am in a similar situation, with a Sharjah residence visa, though I work and live in Dubai. I have to take my driving lessons in Sharjah, which is a real pain and expensive as well, due to the transportation costs. They no longer seem to transfer the driving license file from one Emirate to another and your have to take your lessons and the test in the Emirate from where your residence visa has been issued...
Its a pain... and I have resigned myself to not getting a license in the forseeable future...

Doesn't the residence visa (pink sticker) follow where the company/sponsor is, not where you live?

dude your the smartest guy on the forum. you've atleast understood my question spot on.
yes it is a matter of convenience that i wanted to get DL from AUH not because i thought it was easier in another emirate.
so it seems like its not possible. who do i call to get this clarified? the RTA in dubai? or the licensing authority in abu dhabi?

Your question was already answered, you can only get a D/L from the Emirate which issues your Visa. If you like to call, Dubai Police or Abu Dhabi Police I am sure they will clarify this for you. It would help if you spoke Arabic for this enquiry.
bonk
RTA governs driving license rules in Dubai now, which is why some things seem to have changed (the rules probably haven't, but the RTA is more strict about implementing them). Other emirates still via traffic police.
Usually driving licence comes from same emirate as your visa. Licence valid for all UAE but each Emirate issues their own. Cars supposed to be registered in same emirate as visa.
Exceptions if you live and work in different emirates (show accommodation contract to prove where you live). In the past that could work your advantage (speaking from experience), but the RTA can be so bloody-minded at times, I wouldn't be surprised if it meant you couldn't get a licence at all, nor register a car.
From info.
Re the OPs question, I'd say just go to Abu Dhabi police and try. I think you'd have more luck than if you were dealing with the RTA. Take some proof that you live in Abu Dhabi (telephone bill?).
