We've always (for 3 years) lived in shared villas in Dubai with other Westerners. I have read this is now being restricted by the municipality. As I have been out of the UAE for a couple months, what is the real situation on the ground?

Don't annoy neighbours, especially if they have more wasta than you.
This is one of those PITA rules that is unrealistic given the high costs and demand for accomodation, and supply shortages.

Could anyone please provide some references (announcements, newspaper articles, etc.) about this new regulation which apparently does not allow house sharing anymore?
I was searching the Dubai Municipalitiy's Web site / as well as the UAE govt' / without finding any such annoucement yet.
Thanks,
Rolf

It's not a new rule, just stricter implementation of an old rule. Search or for articles (best done with google rather than their own searches). The above 2 sites are not great for up to date information although uaeinteract has a reasonable news archive.
