UK drivers license

arniegang you should have kept your gob shut at DVLA and sent them a chage of address to a relative's home, and the new licence would have been issued. Also i disagree that DVLA would refuse for your reasons of residency. You are a UK passport holder and the residency is only a stamp in your passort. It does not affect your UK citizenship in any way. I suggest you apply again to DVLA and use a family member or friend address as a change of address and issue of a new photocard licence.
Moxy1980
I'll explain again.
I am a UK citizen.
I have a full UK license, in the old style 'paper' format.
I have just moved to the UAE.
I have received a residency visa.
I want a drivers license.
I have been told the my UK license that is perfectly valid in the UK, is not valid here, unless I get the new 'card' type.
I have asked the UK for a card type but they say they won't give me a 'card' type as i am now a resident of the UAE.
End result. Screwed for NO reason! Moxy1980 Hey, I have recently moved out here, and I have just received my residence visa. However I am being told that I cannot get an UAE drivers license as I have the old style 'paper' UK license and not the new style credit card sized type? I have asked the British DVLA if they can issue me one, but they have said hey won't as I am not longer a UK resident. Kinda between a rock and a hard place. Any ideas? bushra21 take the driving test here rather than switching over the lisence sage & onion
Have you been to the Police to ask if your license is acceptable, because I would have thought they would only be looking at the validity. Moxy1980 I am just going by what my HR department are telling me. Mind you, I get a different answer depending on who I ask! bushra21 oh, well go and check at the dmv... they should accept it sage & onion
Take a trip to the traffic police and ask them yourself. fayz
First off welcome to Dubai where no rules are set in stone.
I'm not British but had a similar situation where they didn't accept my Canadian license because Alberta licenses aren't stamped or some BS reason like that.....
Long story short I got a letter for the Canadian Embassy saying that my license was real/valid duly stamped and signed and presented both the letter and my license and I was done. You may wish to explore this avenue.
... it is also good advice that if someone says no, try a different line or a different licensing department all together rules in DXB seem to be open to interpretation.
Good luck. XPClone I changed my license the other day and there a was women there who only had a paper version. She got her's changed no problem.

Only if your dealer has some pot at hand. sage & onion
Hey 175, can you remember what a car looks like? rossbaku Is there no way that you can arrange (through the British Embassy) for a photocard licence to be issued? Whether this be you keeping a photocopy of the paper licence along with a letter from the British Embassy explaining why there is a photocopy whilst they send your licence off to the UK etc. etc. Just a thought. Ross :D 175bpm
the driving test inn dubai is a joke if you look at all the fucking idiots which are allowed to drive. redmatrice you've forget to say how much does it cost and how much time does it takes gtmash
On the contrary. It is much harder than the U.S. test. Just that the so-called infidels are more civilized than people here. That, and a certain section of the the population just get a licence thru wastaa.
sage & onion
Reallyyyyyyyyyyyyy :?: :?: :?: :?: bushra21
those uncivilized arabs and their darn wastaas... Moxy1980 How much does it cost to change over the license and how long does it take? KeithL
Apply for a license form online and ask your family or friends (whose address you get it posted to) to mail it to you in Dubai.
Fill it out and then submit it with the required payment and send it back to the DVLA who will mail the new style card license Moxy1980 Trying to do that but you can't fill it in on-line, you have to ask for forms. then fill them in. Even then the woman said that they do residency checks as standard as a UK drivers license is worth so much overseas. gtmash
I think you guys misunderstood me at least partially. There are more unedumacated people here, local or imported, than in USA (where schooling is free even for illegals). And, well, I actually came across people (I'll let you guess where they are from) who got a license directly due to wastaa, and learned to drive later somewhat. Before I came across this myself, I always thought these rumours were bullpoo.
Americans are truly clueless at driving, such as proper technique to use mirrors and how to shift gears and all that. but most of them do follow the rules of the road. sage & onion I know 1 or 2 Americans that may not agree with your statement  Jamal
true that .. asc_26
Expensive! You need to undergo driving lessons then take the test. As for the time - it depends on you. If you failed the test, you have to undergo another driving test until you pass, then that's the time they'll issue your driving license.
This driving thing drained my pocket and i failed the test. :D Dubai Knight You don't need a new style UK licence, the paper one is still recognised here. I got mine on a rather tatty and disheveled version! They transferred all the categories from my UK one as well...so I can drive motorbikes, trucks and buses and tanks and everything! Costs 150Dhs. and takes about 1 hour to do at the Central Police Station Traffic Department. Really easy compared to some of the other official places such as Immigration Dept.   Knight Concord
Should you be rehearsing  Concord Sorry about last post but see above my avatar. Privileges. privileges... Dubai Knight
Mine is the ability to play guitar in my sleep!

Waking up is the problem - for me anyway 8) redmatrice
I've my moroccan driving license for about 5 years now , all this 5 years i've been driving everyday , so if i failed the test , i'll kill my self asc_26
That's suicide. :D Concord
Can I have your stuff when you do? sage & onion
Do they have cars in Morocco redmatrice
No , only dromedary , and what if i tell i see usually Bugati Veyron , Maserati , The New CL 500 , Bentley , Hummer , Lamberguini etc ... all the you can see in dubai :) redmatrice
Sure!! :) sage & onion
I read the same magazine  gtmash
Those are some funny camel names! bushra21
Does that make you feel special? redmatrice
Special or not it's not the question now , i said that cuz he thought that morocco is sahara Legendkiller  sage & onion
Hey Red,
Just having fun m8 redmatrice sage i know :) Moxy1980
Thanks for that mate, appreciate a reply that has something to do with that actual topic.
Cheers. bushra21 hey! the first page was filled with responses to your question... and then people got side tracked sage & onion
Thread Hijacking, we are all expert's at it Moxy1980 THEY WON'T GIVE ME A LICENSE UNLESS I HAVE THE CARD VERSION FROM BRITIAN!!!! This is ridiculous! They say I can't use my perfect valid uk paper license until I get a perfectly valid uk card license! Chocoholic That's so stupid, my boyfriend only had the paper version of his licence from Greece and it was all in Greek and they transfered it, and never even asked for a translation. Chocoholic Moxy, here's an idea. Go to the head quarters of the traffic department and ask to speak to the Captain of the traffic police. He is allowed to make a judgement call over whether you can get your licence transfered. You might have to wait around for a few hours to see him, but it might be worth it and save you from the hell that is Dubai's driving schools. I had an Abu Dhabi visa, but lived in Dubai so obviously wanted a Dubai licence to buy a car in this Emirate, and they told me he had to make the decision on whether to grant it or not. Whatever you do, don't get angry or aggressive, just be polite and explain the situation and you might get lucky. Moxy1980 Thanks for the replies. Don't worry I won't get wound up. Oe of the problems is that I can't get to the traffic office as I don't have a car and have to work. Before you say it I know I could get a taxi but as I say I'm at work most of the time. So I'm having to go through the Human Resources department and they just see things in black and white. Chocoholic Moxy, you will have to take a half day off work or something, because you will never get this stuff sorted unless you go and do it yourself. Concord Can't your Company's PRO sorted it out for you as a "favor"? They should know the ways, etc. ^ian^ Moxy, are you a UK citizen? I think you might have trouble converting a licence from a country you're not a citizen of. gtmash
As others have mentioned, if you go directly to the traffic department, one of those guys might reject it again, but then you go another day and another guy at another counter might accept it. Hit-and-miss game, this. Moxy1980
Yep, thats wat I'm going to try. It will take about a week or more to get the forms, a day or two tot send them back, a week for them DVLA to get, 6 weekes to process, couple of days to send to parents, then a week to send over here. Absolutely ridiculous. sage & onion
This is the correct thing to do. Go and ask to se a senior officer and ask kindly. Moxy1980 Does anyone know the open hours of the Traffic police offices? sage & onion
8am - 2:30pm should do it
